Sorthnarolina's Mock Draft 4.0...

I don't know why but I luuuuuuuuuuuv making mock drafts. I'm trying to make this one more in line with team philosophies. Build through the draft and no massive contracts for players outside the team.

Major needs:

QB

DT x 3

TE

Needs:

CB

WR

OG

OT

Free Agents

Resign: C. Johnson, Kalil, Davis, Anderson, Rosario, J. Williams, Jon Beason(extension)

Franchise: D. Williams.

Let Go: Moore, Marshall, King, Hayden, E. Johnson

Bring In:

DT Barry Coefield- This draft is very deep at DT so we shouldn't spend too much on them in FA. However, we really have nothing at the position.

TE Kevin Boss - good TE who wouldn't break the bank but also could be the guy Rivera and Chud are looking for.

QB Billy Volek - I don't care if nobody likes this, he's a a good stopgap for a year. Doesn't make any sense to go after a long term QB in FA. but if the entire team were to beast he could stabilize the position enough for us to make it to the SB. I don't think he'd hold us back.

TE Randy McMicheal- he's a TE with experience under Cudzinkzi. Makes sense.

Trade:

D. Williams and a 4th for Denver's 14th pick in the 2nd round - With Fox to Denver and no Skipper in Carolina this makes since at least in the fan made mock draft world. This trade values Williams as a late 2nd.

The Draft:

1st - CB Patrick Peterson - PP is the best solution to the tricky problem at CB. He could be as good or better than the best of the FAs. He will most likely be just as good as a mid level FA. Cost wise he's as much as a mid level FA maybe even cheaper.

2nd(Denver) - NT Phil Taylor - who doesn't love a massive NT?

3rd - OG/OT Benjamin Ijalana - a good reserve to have.

3rd(comp) - DT Jarvis Jenkins - A good 3rd option which leaves Landri at as a 4th option, that I can live with.

Add depth wherever you please for the rest of the picks:D

IDK, some Raider CB is supposed to be a free agent and I heard he's pretty good :D

Good read btw

He's not just pretty good, he's the best. The only reason the media isn't jizzing all over him is because he plays on the Raiders. So yeah, as much as I like PP, that statement's pretty outrageous.

mock is pretty good, though i'm still not crazy about trading williams away.

there is one thing i have to take issue with, though.

Doesn't make any sense to go after a long term QB in FA.
huh?

going after a stop gap is a lame solution that only puts off the inevitable. it doesn't do anything to make the team better long term.

if they are going to mess around in FA, it should be someone with some kind of long term potential. of the FAs out there, volek is no better than any of them. people forget that volek is a headcase himself. more than that, an OLD headcase who has started 10 games in 10 years? with 3 wins? last time he started was 6 years ago. seriously? this is the best solution you could come up with? what in the world is appealing about some guy who went and whined for a trade when he was told he wasn't going to be handed the starting job in tenn. and they actually wanted him to work and compete against kerry collins? he's not good at anything other than being a backup in san diego, where he has been more than content to sit. there is no competitive spirit in this one. not a good mentor or anything for this team.

I can see the points about volek so just insert whatever vet qb your prefer. They want to take a look at clausen so I figure they hold off on signing anybody like Mcnabb or a younger guy like kolb.

I was originally doing kerry collins but I don't know if he's allowed to come back here.

i would rather have a younger vet who at least has some potential to be a long term solution. bring in some real competition for jimmy. getting a 30 something year old vet isn't what i consider real competition. got to be thinking long term here.

do want a Tavaris Jackson/Trent Edwards kind of player? Semi-young with a little bit left in the tank.

I'd just as soon as go with a dinosaur to a 2-3 year contract max who can buy time until Rivera & co. draft their own QB or Jimmy somehow steps up.

I wouldn't be against drafting a QB this year but that is probably not likely.

better a tjax than a volek for sure.

i just don't think the team will be any better off with an old guy in there. i don't like putting potential on the bench.

teh FAs i'm looking at are gradkowski, tarvaris jackson, grossman, thigpen, moore, alex smith, maybe derek anderson. i would take any of these guys for their long term potential over some old guy with no future. see if we have something to work with from the competition and if not, then draft someone next year.

i wouldn't be opposed to trading for orton if we don't have to give up too much.

aside from cam newton, there isn't really anyone in this draft appealing to me.

Asomugah will be expensive so he's not even on my radar when trying to make a more realistic mock draft. Hurney would rather try to draft the next Asomugah than sign the current one.
