Our Panthers 2011

BOLD ARE KEEPER ITALICS ARE POSSIBLE PLAIN GONE

IMO these are the folks that will have a job in 2011 for the Panthers providing there is a season and all of our Core Free Agents are signed.

I think because of the new staff very few beyond the starting line up will be locked in on this team.

Of the italics I think are gone is Robinson (bust) Brayton (no longer needed) Rosario or King but not both(if we dont bring in a FA). I believe Barnidge is more of the TE we are looking for providing he can improve his blocking. I also believe that if we use a 2 TE set, King is more of what we want than Rosario. If we bring in a Free Agent I wouldn't be surprised to see Rosario and King let go.

Charly Martin was having a good preseason and looked like he might make the team when he got injured. I think he has a better chance of staying just because he reminds me of Proehl (I said in preseason)

Moore or a Free Agent will be here. Pike I think should be given a little bit more opportunity to show what he can do. If he hasn't improved his arm strength then let him go.

I think the RB corp is by far the most set position. Dwill, Stewart, Goodson and Fiammeta make this a good unit add Sutton and it is set.

I like our defensive ends and I think Brayton will be cut loose. Keeping with the new tradition of letting the young blood play. I see some exciting times with Brown, Johnson, Hardy and Norwood with this new defensive scheme. Though Norwood is probably a tweener. Taylor is history.

I like Landri, Nesbitt and Hayden but I believe Johnson is our only set guy on the D-Line. IMO is why we will draft Fairley. We just really don't have much there. Only because of his motor do I think we keep Landri. Landri next to a beast like Fairley could really do well.

Linebacker is like our RB corp. I really think if we keep Davis we will be pretty set with our LBs.

DBs I like and hopefully Marshall will wise up and know he has a starting position on a team that is going to be good next year.

Pugh, Stanford and McClain from last years draft might really be steals. They will definitely provide depth.

I know many people have slammed Hurney for the picks he has made and some of the trades he has made have really bitten us in the A$$ but he has made up for it with some late round luck. Gettis, Stanford, Pugh and McClain all might end up being good steals for us.

I do hope we fill our needs with some midrange players like we used to. Many of them have panned out. Much better than the High Priced ones we had.

Though not the expert that many of you (hahahaha) This is how I see it playing out. I await your comments.

I think we let Richard Marshall roll out of town. I'd be very suprised if both Matt Moore and Pike are still on the team next year. Armanti Edwards should be in bold, not because he is good, but because there is no way we wasted a 2011 2nd round draft pick on a guy we are going to cut after one season, and if we go hard for an all purpose TE in free agency or the draft (as expected) then one would assume we would keep Jeff King being the best blocker of the current bunch. I'm not sure what kind of contract Tyrelle Sutton has with us, but unless he is a free agent, i do not think we will lose him.

Other than that, the list is pretty solid.

I could see Moore and Pike staying.

Pike on Practice Squad.

Moore, Clausen, Vet FA on the roster.

I had him bolded and then put him italics because you just don't know whether the New OC is gonna want that type of project. His scheme maybe not include an AE type of player. So I italics him. I agree with your point though.

It will be Moore or a Free Agent. I think Pike gets an opportunity and if he doesn't pan out. They jettison him.

I would like to keep Marshall and hopefully he is excited about this type of defense. IMO this type of pressure Defense puts DB's in good positions for interceptions.

But all your points are very valid and can't argue too much.

Somebody please give me some clarification on something I'm confused about:

Using D_Will as an example. His contract is up. He is not a RFA to the best of my knowledge. We can offer him a contract, but the ball is in his court. He can accept it or choose to move on to another team if he so chooses. Barring a tag of course.

Is this correct? Can he walk regardless of the offer we make? How many other players does this apply to? I believe Rosario and King should be in the same situation. Moore as well.

I've been lurking around, and haven't' heard anybody address this directly.

I think Pike will come into camp, but if we demote him to practice squad another team would take a chance and sign him to active roster. Regardless, Pike won't be dressing out for the Panthers next season if we "address" the QB situation.

I don't think Chudzinski has the power to have Armanti Edwards cut from the team before next season. AE is Hurney's 2010 draft project, not Chud's. Hurney and Rivera hired Chud, Graves, and Proehl to develop our young guys like Armanti, not give up on them.

OK.... the italics means he isn't a LOCK.. IMO he isn't. I believe he is more than likely going to be a Panther next season but if Chud has no use for him than maybe we trade him away for a low round pick.

Once again... I think he stays... I hope he stays but he isn't a LOCK.

We are going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I would think Armanti is more of a LOCK than FA's: DWill, RMarshall, RKalil, & CJohnson only for the simple fact that they are FA's and will have an opportunity to field offers from other teams. As much as it pains me to say it, I would even consider Armanti more of a LOCK to be on next year's roster than Steve Smith only because there are rumblings Smitty is unhappy and we can trade and get value for him.

Maybe i am being a little picky, but i just thought AE should be in bold moreso than some of the other guys you listed as LOCKS because he is under contract and has been labeled a 2-3 year project since we drafted him.

    • I think you've nailed what we need right here.  Rodriguez and Thieneman would be my choices, Thieneman in the first and Rodriguez in the second. Let everyone else eat up their picks on the crop of WRs and linemen. Then make a push in free agency for the top center.
    • Vernon Gholston vibes?  had 14 sacks at Ohio State in 2007; 45 games in the NFL:  0 sacks.
    • I want a high impact player, but a true FS who could qb the secondary might be more effective than we realize.  I don't think Moehrig is that guy (I think he is overpaid, however).  I want a flashy, high impact player, but we could use defensive qbs at ILB  and FS.  By upgrading skill AND adding vision and leadership, could we get better than if we added an edge or OT? I am not sure that I believe this myself, but I try to look at things from all perspectives.  Here is some devil's advocacy stuff: 1. EDGE-We are freaking out about the pressure we put on the qb from the edge position.  However, Jones II and Wonnum missed a total of 22 games. Scourton was a rookie and Princely was a third rounder.  Wharton sucked (not sure if he was used properly--a hybrid who can rush from the 5 tech or 3, etc), and this put more pressure on Scourton and the other edge players.  This year, we get Jones II, Scourton should continue to evolve with Princely.  Perhaps another rookie is not what we need.  Maybe a veteran situational pass rusher.  2. OFFENSIVE TACKLE:  Of course, we need an OT, but the draft is loaded with OTs that can pass block but struggle in run blocking--so a rookie at LT might not be the answer for a team that wants to run first.  What to do?  I am not sure.  I see Nijman returning after testing the market, but who knows? 3.  INSIDE LB:  A huge need, regardless of how you spin it.  However, I see a few free agents who would be solid here, and I see the second round having a few ILBs with starting potential.  I do not see an ILB worth the first round pick unless a freak falls to us. 4.  With veteran defensive backs, a young, intelligent FS could fit in nicely. Intelligence is key--like the way Luke made the front 7 better. "A good, intelligent free safety (FS) acts as the "quarterback of the defense" transforming a unit from good to great by acting as the last line of defense, communicating pre-snap adjustments, and anticipating plays before they happen. By reading the quarterback's eyes and diagnosing offensive schemes, an intelligent FS acts as a "centerfielder" who can neutralize deep threats and mitigate errors made by cornerbacks or linebackers."
