Cam Newton Workout Phenomenal

workouts don't mean a lot. private workouts not run by scouts mean even less. there, you happy now? =p

who exactly do you think was the 5th best QB last year if not Pike, btw? lol.

Lefevour, Webb, Skelton, Crompton, Kafka, Canfield come to mind.

Mind you I am not saying these guys are good QB's (I don't think any of those guys besides Webb will amount to anything) but guys I would have ranked ahead of Pike. Canfield was even picked after Pike so I am not a genius either.

There is about 15 seconds of him actually working out. He made 1 throw in that video.

When you say yet did they say the whole workout would be released? I have a feeling there will be no more released.

I have a hunch that it will magically leak out closer to draft time. Hype, hype, hype.....

Not really. In fact, in any draft, you'll have a variety of concerns about different players.

So is Mike Mayock.

Dilfer's wrong sometimes too. They all are.

Im not brushing Mayock off either. IMO its way to early to say one way or another. What he does with his wonderlic and Combine will say a lot. I would expect him to do almost every exercise to prove he can do it. If he does not, then I will change my stance on him. As of right now Cam Newton needs to prove he can do everything if he want to be the 1st QB selected.

Canfield has a worse arm than Pike. Please don't ever mention him in terms of NFL QBs again.

K thanks

Only Mav is going to answer my question about what they are basing their sudden determination on. Was it the video you saw or the comments?

You might want to go back about 10 or so pages and read what Bucky Brooks, a real live ex NFL scout said about Cam. He was there and interviewed him one on one.

I guess it makes more sene to use Mayock though right? You know, since he wasn't even there and all. Not to mention the fact that he has Locker as the #2 QB on his board. What the hell has Locker done to deserve #2 that Cam hasn't? Would Cam had been better off passing for under 60% and not being a winner? I don't get it.

Maybe it's that Locker comes from a more pro friendly offense and thus doesn't have to adjust to the NFL offensive alignments like Cam will....

There have been a couple of write ups about the workout and they were positive TRD. Not just Dilfer. Plus a couple of tweets that were positive form some of the media scouts. I think there are some links buried in this massive thread.

What does any of that have to do with my question? I just wanted to know if everyone was basing their determination on the comments they heard about the workout or from what they saw in the workout itself?

What good does it do to come from a pro offense when you suck at running it? Locker has never proven himself as a passer. That's a fact.

My observation was positive as well, I'm just wondering if you SAW anything that changed your mind?

Those videos don't show much.

The answer is that people are forming their opinions from the NFL scout who was there and talked to the guy one on one, along with all the games we have watched.

I was there, and you never asked me if I was a "real live ex NFL scout"

Honest question though...Did you expect him to look anything other than stellar?

    • His completion % wasn’t even high.  Think OP misstated a stat.  Bryce was 30th this week in completion %.  The bottom is where he has been every year in the NFL in that department.   you gotta dig real deep in analytics to make a Bryce argument
    • Agreed.  Setting protections is one of the more difficult things for an NFL QB to learn but I did see a lot of improvement over the past year.  It's still an issue but getting better.  Reich hung him out to dry in that aspect and almost got him killed. Once Canales gave him a hot read or option for blitzes and pressure he did much better.  The more experience he gets the better he'll get.  That's also another good reason to keep a strong oline.  Mitigates that a little bit.
    • I'll just piggy back off what I said earlier here.    The problem with Bryce is and has always been his height combined with his arm. The reason he works so well ad-libbing is that he usually gets out of the pocket or allows the offensive line time to open throwing lanes which allows him to see the defense better, and manipulate the defense because of his legs which eliminates the need to read defense mostly.    The reason he doesn't work well in structure is because he can't make those reads at the line on what the defense is running and where to move protection, so he doesn't immediately know where to go with the ball based on coverages/ pressures so he runs the play exactly as it's called and goes through normal progressions 1-2-3.    He's gotten better at reading just based on Sundays game because he didn't nearly look as bad at it as he did last year and he didn't have AT to set lines and stuff for him.
