DT Mike Patterson - potential FA pick up

F Nick Hayden. I think he's finally come to his end in Carolina. For whatever reason, Fox kept wasting money and a roster space on this guy when he's been bad whenever he's played. He gets pushed around like he's 190 lbs rather than 290. He'd be better suited on a 3-4 team as a DE anyway.

I have always thought he would be a better DE than DT, I hate Hayden but you have to admit he has made some improvement this year.

Apparently he might be available given that the Eagles are going to void the last 5 years on his contract due to a technicality. Still the question remains why the Eagles want to dump him and why we want to pick him up. There is also discussion that Seattle might be in the market as well raising the thought of a bidding war.

He is still due close to 30 million.

His numbers didn't exactly show it, but Landri is a decent pass rusher. He was constantly getting penetration (which he actually does have numbers to show) and if he had a decent big DT beside him, I think he'll be even better at making tackles behind the LoS.

That might apply if we drafted Fairley. But Patterson is short and more like a fireplug.

I wasn't meaning to imply Patterson would be that big guy next to him, I think Patterson and Landri would rotate (Patterson on running downs, Landri on passing).

And I think Dareus would make it apply better. Fairley is also a penetrating DT, Landri needs a stuffer next to him not a penetrator.

...that sounded a lot dirtier than I intended.

McDermott's defense is a penetrating defense that wants to make tackles in the backfield. As such it favors 1 gap penetrating guys who can play the pass and run. Patterson is decent but for a first rounder, he is not great.

    • No saying he mostly sucks is saying that he doesn’t suck the minority of the time.   Like if he took 17 tests and had a couple of really good showings and a handful of pretty good scores sprinkled in among the typical sub par results.   Like a golfer who went out and shot an 89.  There will be some real nice shots sprinkled in there but at the end of the day it is still 89.
    • It's worth mentioning... Game 1: Oct 11 in Raleigh. 4-3 OT win with a complete starting lineup. Game 2: Dec 13 in Philly. 4-3 SO win without Jaccob Slavin. Game 3: Dec 14 in Raleigh. 3-2 SO win with a complete starting lineup. Game 4: Apr 13 in Philly. 3-2 SO loss with the AHL roster.  Those early season games were no indication of the Canes team that finished the season. Miller and Ehlers were still trying to figure things out, Nikishin was still a work in progress and the Stankoven line was just another line. Make no mistake, the Canes team Philly will see is nothing close to what they saw at any point in the season. If the top line starts producing, Freddie stays hot and the blue line does what it does, this could be a sweep as well.
