Union agrees to seven-to-ten day extension

If the players are smart they will cut there loses and sign the best deal they can get. If they decertify, many players will go bankrupt before they get paid. They will probably win in the court system, but this will take years. I doubt most NFL players are savy investors.

From Schefter (Twitter)

Two sides still roughly $25 million apart per team per year. Doesn't sound like much but it's a $750-$800 million gap that must be closed.

Peter King states that a fourth issue has emerged to add to the big three (revenue split, rookie pay scale, 18 game season) but I haven't seen word on what it is yet.

For those who think Richardson is the only grumpy owner, this from Michael Silver...

Goodell, meanwhile, had managed to marshal the hard-liners and moderates alike among his ranks – and to extract enough union concessions to make a settlement palatable to the overwhelming majority of owners. He also kept his cool during a very tense period of negotiations, which on Wednesday, according to several people familiar with the meetings, included New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft snapping at Bob Batterman, the labor attorney retained by the league for these negotiations, because he felt Batterman was speaking in legalese platitudes.

Not really... The same amount of money is in circulation... It will just be spent elsewhere...

...and there you have the perfect example of how our monetary system is a joke in the first place...

Chicken and egg.....fact is without a Chicken, there is not egg and without an egg there is no chicken....take away the money train and the money doesn't necessarily continue to flow especially when that train employees so many.

From Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal (Twitter)

definitely hearing a 7-10 day extension of NFL CBA deadline is all but a done deal

Also from Kaplan, King's "fourth issue" appears to be whether or not players who paid into COBRA in anticipation of the lockout will be reimbursed.

More from Silver, what's likely to happen...

Even though the situation remained precarious at the end of business Thursday, the two sides had begun to shape the basic structure of a new CBA. Not surprisingly, it would resemble the type of agreement we suggested at the end of our fan’s guide to the labor situation last summer.

The owners would indeed get more money off the top before splitting “adjusted gross revenues” with the players – more than the $1 billion they received annually under the current deal, but less than the $2 billion they’d been demanding until recently. In simplistic terms, the owners would achieve an agreement they believe is roughly equivalent to the one that was on the table in 2006 before, they feel, Upshaw took advantage of outgoing commissioner Paul Tagliabue’s desire for labor peace at any cost and skewed the deal toward the union’s interests.

In this case, the hit to the players would be somewhat mitigated by an increase in revenue driven by the move to an 18-game regular season. The addition of two games (and elimination of two preseason games) might not be immediate, and the players would receive concessions such as limitations to offseason workouts and training camp practices and a new formula allowing them to qualify for certain benefits with fewer seasons played than in the past. However, in the end, the union is likely to capitulate and agree to the “enhanced” season in exchange for other considerations – again, something that was predicted many months ago.

In all probability, there will also be a rookie wage scale that increases revenues while playing to the popular sentiment among fans that the guaranteed money received by top draft picks is exorbitant when compared to the salaries of accomplished veterans.

The owners will be granted their longstanding request to have Doty removed as the arbiter of all CBA disputes, and there will likely be a provision extending player health care benefits in the event of a future lockout.

Mildly amused at the part about David Doty

I've been hoping that the players would push back hard against this 18 game season, but i now looks like it'll happen :(

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
