The Cam Newton and Race Thread!

Why should a person's race matter if they are head and shoulders above the competition; basing the reasoning of not drafting them simply due to past precedent?

This is like taking a family member who is far less skilled at a job than the qualified, educated, and skilled non-family member just because it's the good ole boy way.

I'm white (mostly) and listen to rap music. I don't listen to Eminem though, not because he's not a good rapper, he is, but because bumping his music makes me feel awkward.

I do find it funny though that EVERY SINGLE decent WR prospect that is white gets compared to Wes Welker, and that's ok, but comparing Cam's bust potential to JR is racism.

CarolinaCatBrigade, I agree completely with your post. Sure there are exceptions, but if we are looking at it from a 'safe pick' standpoint, we would not want to draft a white RB #1 overall. Black QB's have a higher bust rate than white QBs from what I observe. Do I know that for a fact? No, it's just an ignorant opinion. Just like White RB's have a higher percentage at busting than a black RB. Again, I don't have any real numbers.. but it seems accurate based on the amount of black QBs to white QBs in the league.

its actually the other way around idiots. there are more white qb's so they have higher bust since there are fewer black qb's that actually get to play their natural position. Most of them are still playing and are not bust same for white RB's

I'm black and I would never compare Nelson to Welker or anyone else. It's like someone said earlier. As a kid white kids are either the QB the kicker or a lineman and black kids are the rb or wr. Its the small minded people that cant get past ignorant tradition

is it wrong to pretend to know whats in the hearts of african americans and african american athletes with no evidence but bias and ignorance? To portray all as unintelligent beings? That were all lazy criminals after white folks money? Some people on your staff and on this board want to be able to say ignorant derogatory things and not be accountable. They want to judge but hate being judged themselves. the truth is this offseason aint about Cam, its about us as Panther fans. if we dont like the stigmas maybe we should WORK to change them rather than sweep under the rug. I will say the team itself has impressed me so far this offseason.

to be fair, you have been doing a lot of the same thing. if someone didn't want mike vick, that gave you (in your head) license to say that they just didn't want a black QB. ftr, just because you don't want a certain black QB doesn't mean you don't want any black QB.

you were also pretty free about throwing out the insinuation that the panthers organiation was racist because they hadn't drafted or tried to get any black QB, even though they hadn't done much in the way of drafting any QB or bringing any in worth a crap.

we can't know the hearts of anyone (regardless of race) anymore than you can.

this wasn't meant as any kind of attack, btw, and i'm not making justification for either. it's just as wrong to pigeonhole whites as supremacists or racists as it is to pigeonhole black QBs as jamarcus russell clones.

Not everyone is racist. But everyone has stereotypes. To believe you are not stereotypical is a lie. It's very common in each individual. Stereotypes are everywhere. It's like applying for a job and they ask the question "do you recall telling a lie within the past year?" and if you answer "no" then you are lying. I myself am just openly telling you my stereotypes. Do I believe stereotypes matter? No. Success has come from at every level and at every job from various races.

But as far as the "head and shoulders above the competition" thing. I don't see anything in Cam Newton that shows me he won't be a project that will take 2-3 years.

I'm simply saying that when I compare Newton to Russell it is simply comparing bust potential. Not race or skillset or tools or programs or work ethic or where their head is at. It is simply comparing that neither IMO was a consensus slam dunk #1 pick, but given the situations of the team with the first pick, they were (in Newton's case hypothetically) drafted. If we draft Cam I will be the first one buying the $275 authentic jersey to support the guy, but that doesn't mean I want him #1 if I had my way. But I will trust the Panthers FO to do their jobs and support whoever they pick.

I'm just banning people who turn this crap racist.

if you continue to turn a blind eye to peoples ignorant comments and ban people who challenge them youre gonna bring the wrong kind of attention and animosity to Zods real world business. A vbulletin control panel isnt the answer. This board is already being monitored. Pissing off psl holders and paying fans of the Panthers probably isnt a smart move. Were all here to express opinions, but banning one group and shielding another isnt gonna end well. not to mention you arent partial at all on this topic.

I never said I doubted an athlete because of their race. I gave my opinion on stereotypes, and then I stated that Newton has shown me nothing that makes him without a doubt the sure fire #1 pick. I wanted Vick a season or two ago, because coming out of college he was the real deal (and has proved that in the NFL). Newton has 1 season as a starter in a spread offense, had a bad combine, and his pro day wasn't impressive. Why you people are so convinced is beyond me.

Do I believe that African Americans are for no good other than increased crime rates, athletic purposes, picking cotton, and rap music? Absolutely not. Colin Powell is one of my favorite leaders and speakers of all time. Do I believe that all whites are rednecks who have nothing but buck teeth, like Dale Jr, and believe drinking on a cooler on top of a motor-home at the race is the American way? No. Do I believe Hispanics are no good for anything other than agricultural work, construction work, or food production? No.

Just because you choose to stereotype people is your own choice. However, it does show intelligence and cultural awareness.
