Reeves: Panthers should draft Cam Newton

We'll have more in Sunday's paper about some of the dynamics involved in trading the first pick in the NFL draft, which the Panthers own.

But the coach who benefited twice from moving up in the order, not down, said if he was the Panthers, he'd stand pat.

"If I'm them, I'm taking Cam Newton," former Falcons and Broncos coach Dan Reeves said. "I think that guy is going to be a great player.

"You can't win without one, and trust me, when I lost them, I got fired."

Reeves, who coached the Broncos when John Elway was acquired, said when he's watched Newton, he sees some of the same dynamic qualities that drew him to Michael Vick in Atlanta. But while both could make plays with their legs, Reeves said Newton has a better arm, and wasn't concerned at all with Newton playing in a spread offense.

"I can teach a guy to get up under center," Reeves said. "But I can't teach a guy to throw. He has a tremendous arm, and I think he's going to be really effective no matter what he was doing in college.

Eh same old argument imo. It's true that you need a franchise QB to be relevant, but the question still remains - is Newton/Gabbert a franchise QB? I respect Reeves, but this is nothing we don't know, nor does his premise really prove his conclusion imo.

I agree. Nobody on this forum is walking in here and saying, "This team is set at quarterback 100%. Jimmy Clausen Tony Pike all the way!"

That doesn't mean that the answers for that spot are in this draft though

Doesn't mean the answer isn't in this draft either. I honestly dont know why every one assume this class is full of backups and busts.

You didn't see the other threads about Cam Newton and what so and so thinks about drafting him?

Yes, I did see the other 100+ page threads full of back and forth bantering about Cam but I didn't know this article was buried in one of them.

    • It appears that he sees things differently than the QB and OC, so Cam's advice is spot on. It isn't about number of targets, it's about quality of targets. Trust and being on the same page. BY doesn't know how to anticipate what XL is doing. And XL doesn't like where BY is placing passes. One on one film study would go a long way. More for BY than XL though. He has to adjust to XL. I really don't think XL can adjust on the fly.
    • If the team shows improvement, then he shouldn't be in danger of losing his job - even if the record doesn't reflect. This was a very young team (with a lot of new vet starters) that overperformed last season. Somebody's doing something right. Consistency is key with so much youth. And we're potentially looking at new starters at ILB and FS. Those are positions that take time to fully understand the defense. ILB calls the front 7. Safety calls the back 4. Injuries at WR and IOL killed the offense last season. Depth needs to be upgraded. Same with Edge. I think they would have won more games if Pat Jones doesn't go down early. Be smart with the roster and draft. Trade players for assets when it's time to pay them more than they're worth - yes, that includes BY if he doesn't make a pretty big jump. That's one of the many reasons Tillis is as important as anyone to the future of this team.
    • He had heart surgery a while back he looks Fraile I hope he is okay
