Question for those who don't wanna draft a QB

Matt is a winner. He has won at every level. He is traditionally a slow starter. It was wrong to bench him after 7 quarters. He would have improved the offense as the season went on. But I think we will see him in camp fighting for a starting spot.

yeah, it's definitely going to be interesting to see what our qb situation looks like by the beginning of the next season.

So your saying we shouldn't draft offense because more youth to that side is a bad idea.

But you're ok with going defense the whole draft and instead implementing youth there and leaving the worst offense to take the field in years intact because this is presumably a poor draft? I say presumably because lets all remember none of us can see in the future and know which players will bust or not.

Where did I ever say I think the whole draft should be defense? :nonod:

I'm saying people who think we should draft a rookie quarterback because "our offense needs help right now" are completely misguided.

A rookie quarterback is going to have no impact on our offense this season, none.

A J Green might, but we just drafted three receivers last year. Using yet another draft pick, especially the top one, on that spot is silly.

Other than Green, the consensus top 8 or 9 players ARE on defense. Of course if you say one thing, huddlers tend to exaggerate it to the point of ridiculousness.

I'm sure you said the top players in this draft are on defense and the other guy turns it around and thinks that you only want to draft defense.

I wouldn't say misguided, but a lot of fans are frustrated that we haven't really found a true franchise QB in the history of our team [i guess you could count Jake, but he was discovered too late in his career imo and peaked within his first 2 1/2 years]. Thus holding the top pick in the entire draft is very appealing and gives us the ability to get the best QB available.

We'll most likely get a vet regardless and still have Jimmy...so why the hell not take the risk? As you said, we have the wideouts, additionally the running backs, tight ends, and a solid line that needs depth...so its not about getting younger on offense but filling the last position to round this team out and bottom line is that the first pick in the entire draft is the best way to do this whether it be using it to trade down or taking the risk on Gabbert or Newton.

A big problem though is on top of the fanbase being incredibly undecided and/or conflicted, most analysts can't even make up their minds on the top pick or QB. This fact alone draws many people away and I'll admit it makes sense. But I can't tell anyone what our FO is thinking anymore than anyone else, so I stay open to drafting a QB.

And you can't just say a rookie QB will have no impact. No one can tell the future or how a QB can fit into our brand new system. Again, it comes down to the crowd who's not willing to take the risk and build the supporting cast until they think our roster is ready for a QB versus the people who are open to the idea of taking a QB #1 because it is our main need as a team and we have many things in place already. Wasn't this a main reason why people thought Clausen made so much sense last year even though he wasn't necessarily our favorite choice as fans?

I hate the fan base being so conflicted, but I guess it comes with the territory of a draft class like this. Good debates in here btw :)

It's quite intriguing how guys are willing to put a No.1 overall pick into a DT,DB, or DE who isn't on the same level as Suh. When you're taking number one you take the position with the most value, and in todays NFL that is the QB position.

With the additional compensatory picks, and our current stock of picks I'm sure we can address areas of needs without selling out REACHING for a defensive player number one overall who isn't worth it.

Like others have pointed out Vet + Clausen + Gabbert/Newton is the more valuable scenario. Gabbert and Cam may not be ready this year, but is taking a defensive player really going to change anything for the leagues worst offense? I don't think so, bringing in talent at QB is a must at this point...do you really think a guy like Rivera wants to put his future in the hands of the QB's currently on the team. Especially when in his first presser he addressed QB as a position of need and said he liked the defense, saying it was solid, but was left on the field to long.

All I'm saying is over the past few years rookie head coaches have also brought in their guy @ QB via the draft...Mike Smith in ATL-Matt Ryan (1st), John Harbaugh in BAL-Joe Flacco (1st if my memory serves), Raheem Morris-Josh Freeman (1st-People said this was a reach) and if you watch our games you saw the trouble his athleticism and ability to extend plays gave our defense after just a year to grow and learn.

All of those teams have had success, and out of that group two are in our division, and not to mention Brees. We NEED our guy, and of that group only Freeman had a tough rookie season, but the supporting cast in TB was far worse off than in BAL, and ATL, and you see how TB looked in just a season.

great post. rep

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
