Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder Chalk talk

Gabbert definitely has the mental/chalk board side of things (seen in numerous different videos) but I would have liked to seen the same thing (breaking down a play and audibles) from Ponder, especially the pre-snap reads from under center and with playaction...

Honestly, that's a pretty small sample.

These guys have to know all the ins and outs of every play in a playbook with pages in triple digits, and they have to process what to do in each situation with less than three seconds before a huge defensive end flattens them, often in hostile territory with several thousand screaming fans trying to disrupt them.

Dumb jocks? Not so much these days.

and some people don't think the wonderlic matters at all...

it might not be the end all to be all of tests for a QB, but it sure as hell let's you know if a guy can think quickly on his feet AND make the right decision while doing it.

JJ Watt, Ponder, AJ Green (I think) and Gabbert are all friends IRL. They did their pre-draft workouts with the same people. Ponder and Gabbert got really close.

On twitter, Gabbert talks about hanging out with JJ Watt, Ponder, and his brother all the f'ing time, which is crazy since I swear they're all in different states, lol.

Watt--that is who it is.!!! TY

Gabbert shows that he has the football IQ and is aware of his shortcomings (running too soon). He is a very good athlete and can make all the throws. He is coachable. I was impressed.

I just do not see how we pick any other QB with the first pick if that is what we do. Sure, he may be a question mark, but the other options have more.

People shouldn't be too impressed with this stuff, because I guarantee you that edit out anything that would make these guys look bad. Mooch probably coached them up beforehand too. It would do the NFL Network no good to make a prospect look bad on national TV.

FTR , I was talking Ponder up two years ago on this board, but the injuries and the realization that he probably fits better in a west coast style of offense, have kind of made me back off a little bit. I still believe he will be a good NFL QB somewhere though.

One last thought: WHat do the greatest QBs of all time have: Work ethic, brains, accuracy, leadership.

Some ran a 5.2 40, some had their arms strength questioned.

But they all had work ethic, intelligence, accuracy, and could lead men.

Gabbert has these traits. Cam could have them too, but character concerns could reflect issues with work ethic, intelligence, and leadership. By the way, huggers, the Cam NCAA pay for play saga is not over. Your boy could be made out to be a liar in addition to his stealing and cheating. He is the total package.

True, but Gabbert has utilized the media less than Cam has.

About Ponder: I agree. before the injuries, I was certain he would be a top QB--He will be a good NFL QB.

I don't know about that. I've seen Gabbert on the NFL Network a lot lately. Believe me, his agent knows how to promote QB's.

I think gabby has benifited more from the media than cam. Not by much but he sure did come out of no where to be in the number 1 pick talk.

    • As I've said numerous times the last few days, having Thielen on the field has literally 0% to do with my views on this (I've even said I think Renfrow is going to take a ton of snaps from Thielen anyways).  He has more value to this team without playing a single snap than a 2026 5th round draft pick does for the franchise.   His value is helping set up T-Mac, XL, Coker, and Horn for long term success by helping them learn how to be pros, how to go about their business, how to train, how to do all the little things that helped turn Thielen from a D2 undrafted player into a borderline Vikings legend.
    • He only wants to be traded because it's the Vikings who are calling. If he didn't want to be here, he could have retired, instead he took a pay raise to come back for another season.  I get it, it's an opportunity that he'd like to take, but we shouldn't cut off our nose to spite our face because he now wants to jump at this opportunity less than two weeks before the season starts. I'm not against trading him, I'm just against trading him for a return that doesn't help our team as much as having him on the roster would.  I'll put it this way, if a 5th is the best we can get for him from the Vikings and he's now dug in on not wanting to stay this year, I'm saying screw you and trading him to any of the other 30 teams besides the Vikings for the best offer we can get. He was perfectly happy here a week ago, if the Vikings soured him on that and then want to get him for peanuts, then screw them both.
    • Yes and no, he wants to go back and his wife most definitely wants to go back. He took a bunch of team mates to Minny and has worked out with JJ two offseasons in a row. It's where both him and his wife are from.    The money was basically a please come back and help Bryce. Pretty please...here's some more money.    Now he's agreed to a paycut to go back to the Vikings.
