So I might as well admit it...

The pick is not going to be Gabbert, the pick is not going to be Mallett, Green, Locker, Dareus, PP, or Fairley.

I talked to an inside source earlier this evening and well, he is about 90% sure the Panthers are taking Newton. He isn't the highest player on their board but apparently they have pretty much fallen in love with him.

In my three years of knowing him as a source he has been wrong about only one thing the Panthers have done, and no, this isn't some bull poo "My cat is the inside source."

Embrace the Newton.

Yay?

Reality starting to sink in for the fanbase now. Even the Charlotte Observer comments are slightly more pro-Cam than in previous weeks.

I trust Hurney to make the right choice here. He's never steered us wrong in the 1st round before and I have no reason to believe he will here. And I'm not just saying that because Cam's my guy either. I really do believe he's going to be our franchise QB, though.

It won't be instant, but there's little doubt in my mind that Cam can take us where we want to go.

Here is what I like about Newton.

1. Has all the tools to be a very good QB.

2. Can make all the Throws

3. Mobility

4. Desire and drive to be the best.

The majority of college players have one question or another about them and I think Newton's desire to be the best is going to be the deciding factor for us. We may have a tough year next year but I believe with the opening post's inside source. I think we take Newton.

I still really fail to see it, if I had to predict his stats on a full starting season it would be

8 passing tds, 12 ints, 4 rushing tds.

That is a moot point anywhos due to the fact he won't be starting right away.

Thanks for sharing what you heard. If the organization saw something in Newton that they are in love with... then I trust they're making the right choice. Underarmor is going to own the panthers haha

Maybe if he starts as a rookie, I can see those stats. Hopefully either Clausen, Moore, or a vet we bring in can hold down the fort at least so Cam can sit down and learn and adjust before being thrown to the wolves.

If he's given that chance, I can imagine his first year starting looking something like:

55% completions, 2100 yards passing, 18 TD's, 20 INT's. 400 yards rushing, 5 TD's.

Which would be a positive first year for him, IMO. Freeman made a HUGE jump from his rookie year to last year. You tend to see that with 2nd year QB's who sat all or most of their rookie years, assuming they're going to be any good. With guys who start from day one like Ryan, Flacco, Ben, Sanchez, etc. you actually tend to see a drop-off in year 2.

Fine with me, if Verge's sources are correct. At least there's hope.

I think Cam would be the difference between 2 wins and 8 wins, possibly more.

He'll start as a rookie. He's not going to sit behind Clausen and Moore, for fugs sake.

I doubt they'd start him as a rookie, he still has a lot of things to learn. We would need a vet QB to start until he's ready.

    • Very True--and I am a former HS English teacher.
    • Not a Moore fan-but he had a few good games last year-but I want players that scare you--Renfrow's route running and intelligence, Legette's size, speed, and strength, AT's intelligence and route running, Coker's body control, strong hands, and abilty to win contested catches, and TMac's size, body control, and ability to find soft spots in zone coverages.  Horn gives them the ability to stretch the field and he plays special teams.   Moore has a nice smile and can dance.  He filled in well last season, but to get better as a team, you have to upgrade your players.  I think Moore is a bottom of the roster guy who got bumped when we drafted 2 WRs and signed a legit free agent.  Here is the thing--TMac makes us better because he is great against the zone--man?  Good luck with that.  AT's role can be reduced, and that is probably a good thing.  He can specialize in situational football. Coker?  Just getting started. XL?  Just getting started.  Drafting TMac was probably a bit of a wake up call, but XL will be better as the 2. Renfrow?  I see him splitting reps with AT--keeping both fresh and giving different looks. Horn?  Watch the safety cheat his side when he is in the game--I see a young Steve Smith type in him, but he has yet to play a game.  I hear that Morgan loves him.
