Not a reach, and not gonna set us back.

Actually, from what I've read, we can't trade comp picks. You may want to confirm. Otherwise, I agree with what you're saying and we can probably use a future pick (I know that's not popular thinking on the Huddle) and combined it with a pick this year to move into the 2nd if there's a player we feel is worth it.

Hmmm... didn't think about that. Good point. Not sure if that is true but I do remember hearing something like that when they were awarded.

We can still use pick #65 and package it with some other picks if we need to get back into the 2nd though.

The problem with this line of reasoning is, unlike the Panthers, the Patriots don't have a huge need @ QB. As someone said, there's a greater risk of passing on Cam Newton this year in the hopes of stockpiling picks to get Andrew Luck (or another potential franchise QB) next year. What are the odds of the Panthers missing out on a top tier player by trading down too far, especially in a weak draft? How far up and how much would the Panthers have to trade to get the #1 pick in 2012? What if next year's QBs end up being busts while Cam Newton works his way to a successful NFL career w/another team?

Of course, no one really knows the answer, but waiting could end up being a bigger gamble/risk that will truly set the franchise back for some years.

As the saying goes " a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush".

This...

The patriots have A top 3 QB so they can afford to drop back and pick up picks year after year.... They usually don't have 1 major or glaring need on their team either. By passing on a QB with high upside and potential we put ourselves at risk of not being able to have a top QB in the league...

The teams who are consistently good and relevant year end and year out are teams that have good QB play. But if we are striving for mediocrity and a couple a playoff appearances here and there, then by all means draft safe and take another position.

The biggest reach and risk the Panthers have ever taken was giving Jake Delhomme that mammoth contract after the Arizona playoff game. That was a move that set us back 2-3 years and paved the way for us to draft Cam NOW. So people that are pissed off about us potentially drafting him, blame Jake, his agent, JR and the Panthers FO. Very irresponsible move on their part to do that. They didnt keep us "safe" with that move.

meh if Jake was on the team, regardless of how much he was getting paid, Fox woulda stuck with him late into that season. it would have played out the same way. that's just who Foxy is.

the bigger reason we're drafting #1 overall imo is how young we went at QB last year because of what JR wanted in a youth movement. It could really pay dividends this year if those guys really step it up but at the time it was pretty painful.

That move did not set us back a couple years.... What would have happened to the $$$ otherwise??? We didn;t spend last year because of the pending lockout. Also there were other factors to that move like getting under the salary cap.

Giving Jake that deal and taking the easy way out, rather than address the QB spot set us back to this point. We havent had a competent QB since 2006. We havent been the same team or franchise since that playoff game. We're still trying to find out who the guy is. Overpaying a declining QB coming off surgery sets your franchise back 2-3 years.

    • Smith-Wade for me. He has the path to some decent hefty snaps in Evero’s scheme. He held his own last year and improved as he continued to get snaps— If he makes some strides, could be a very capable nickel.  I agree with Sanders. Bryce had some trust in him that final Falcons game post crazy head-stand.  Bryce looked for him a lot that final game and made some critical catches to get us the W. Seems he’s put in major work so I’m hopeful about him.  Wallace will have an offseason under his belt. I like him a lot, was higher graded than most remember in his draft (I.e Brugler had him LB3/70 overall) but he isn’t as cerebral of an LB as we’re used to. I think he could thrive if we get D captain/film-junky type next to him— because right now that’s Jewell.  Still a bit cautious but love the talent. Rozeboom may snag some playing time from him if he’s still working out the kinks.
    • Didnt Canales already say starters are playing in the pre season? either way extra reps dont hurt but im not one of those people that think playing in the pre season would have saved Bryce from an awful start.
