What would be the point of Peterson with Asomugha out there and tons of cap room?

reading zero of the posts but answering the question in the title: NA gets to choose where he goes, PP will not. Another thought: just because we have cap room(only for the moment b/c we havent resigned our core yet), a smart team won't spend all their chips on one player... he will be expensive and getting close to that 30 mark.

Question for those that want Patrick Peterson: Why in the world would we take an unproven corner that's made a name for himself because he's a workout warrior and has had scouts compare him to Terence Newman (good, but definitely not #1 overall good) when Nnamdi Asomugha is going to be a free agent? We'll have tons of money to throw at him if we really are looking to replace Richard Marshall. Asomugha was the first and maybe only corner to ever make #89 his bitch. Doesn't it make a lot more sense to draft a QB at #1 and then go sign Asomugha? Best of both worlds.

If FA was before the draft.... sounds like a plan.

But it isn't and we'd have to assume he would want to sign with us. Maybe he'd take less money to play for a contender. Maybe someone else pays more than us. It's a long shot in the dark that he comes here but your theory pretty much assumes it would be a slam dunk.

Dareus

Peterson

Gabbert

Greene

If its anyone else at #1, then Hurney should be fired for not only screwing up last years draft but this one as well. (and don't get me started on signing Delhomme to a giant contract and releasing him the following year, and letting Peppers walk, and possibly letting Williams walk. Add it all up and it appears Hurney is turning to poo.)

If Rivera takes Peterson, he'll groom Peterson to the system. FA CB signings are typically short term solutions to long term problems unless the CB is young. Asomugha is not. 29 may not seem like an old age but try to name really effective CBs above 30. The list is small. Plus, we may not be getting peterson at #1 either. (if we do get him) There's no indication that the panthers will trade down, or any indication of who they will actually get. Just speculation, fan hype, and the media. God I can't wait for the draft. Next thursdayyyy

I actually agree with Sam Mills Fan. I would much rather sign Aso than draft Peterson.

That being said, within that same logic I would also rather sign Peyton Manning than draft Newton. Braylon Edwards or Santonio Holmes over Green and Jones. And the list could go on and on.

The trick is balancing drafts picks and free agent signings, creating a mix that supports growth, experience and stability all the while being financially savy.

I think that at the heart of the arguement, fans who realy want Newton don't see nor want any option on the team or in free agency at the QB position. And in the draft they see Newton as the best prospect at the QB position. So especially in a draft where there are probably 10 guys that are all very equal, drafting Newton just makes sense.

I don't disagree with this at all. I'm one of the few that isn't a huge fan of Newton but still think he might be the right choice. I just don't feel strong enough to endorse him but at the same time I don't feel strong enough about another player to endorse them either. So I'm just waiting for Hurney's decission and I'll support whatever his decission is within the greater plan. If it's Newton, come Thursday night I will be a Cam Newton fan. If it's Peterson, I'm a Peterson.

    • okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.
    • Jackie, any more reps tomorrow, or is that it for this session?  thanks for the work
    • How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
