Chris Weinke on WFNZ about training Cam

newton won't be thrown out there the way clausen was. most likely the whole of preseason and training camp would be with the intention cam is starting if not right away, then soon. the coaching staff will have spent a lot more time with him and everyone will know that is the goal. the playbook will reflect it.

i guarantee you that he will be getting a lot more coaching and direction than clausen ever did from fox & co. he's also coming with a lot more natural talent and ability to stay upright and extend plays that will give him an edge over clausen as well.

this is an entirely new scenario than last year. new coaching staff (knows what they are doing and gives a crap about developing players) will be a huge factor in that. panthers with newton QBing will have similar success and growth to other QBs who have started as rookies the past few years.

I honestly really hope this is the case. I have nothing against Cam, now that he is a Panther I fully support him, but it just scares me. Im sure everyone can understand my hesitation.

Hoping he gets a lot of coaching and direction, hoping our new coaching staff knows what the hell they are doing, and I hope Cam comes out in the end looking better than Matt Ryan as a rookie and we can shove it right down their throats.

Yeah, the best way to learn is through experience, but not just yet. Maybe increase the amount of time he plays game to game. I think strik9's post addresses that pretty well. Don't wanna put him out there before he is ready.

why not yet? you can not afford to wait in this league like ray said we will groom him from day 1 of being the #1 QB. After a TC and preseason of training he will be ready to start vs Arizona.

All I can say is, damn I hope you are right. Can't take another 2-14 season next year. We can suck, but please don't let us be the worst in the NFL again.

Pleeeeeeeeeeaaasseeeeeee

Btw boo even if we start some lowly vet we will not win more than 7 games.

As long as we win more than the shittiest team in the NFL I could care less.

I really see more positives this season, our QBs will hopefully do better and make better decisions behind a stronger O line with more time.

Lets just hope Cam doesn't have a habit of staring down WRs.

Hopefully with Otah and TD back as well, the team will improve as a whole.

Chris Weinke was on WFNZ this morning discussing his training of Cam Newton. With the lockout going on he said he developed a schedule to try and simulate a training camp so that Cam would get experience during the NFL downtime. Cam is working 12 hours a day from 7am to 7pm. The most talented, naturally gifted guy he's ever been around (notes he has been around some very talented guys.) Regarding his perception of not handling a NFL offense, Weinke said Newton spends 3 hours a day going over the playbook with him and he said that not only grasp it but takes it to the field and applies it. He has picked up quickly on what verbage they study and translates it well in practices.

When asked if Cam is raw, he said that of course he is raw but with the ability he has, the work ethic he is putting in, and the strides he has made thus far, Weinke said he will "absolutely" be the starter at the beginning of the season. He said that a lot of rookies weren't fortunate enough to get their team's playbook and in that respect, Cam is leaps and bounds ahead of other rookies.

Spending a lot of time with Cam, he said he is a loyal guy and works his tail off. His smile is not fake and as people get to know him in Charlotte they are really going to like this guy.

He said that Cam asks all the right questions, is very inquisitive, and while if he doesn't understand something he stops Weinke, asks questions, and makes sure he does before they move to other topics.

....Missed the last 2 minutes but I think they were just gabbing about the 1-15 season.

Awesome, absolutely awesome.

    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
    • I parked in this lot a few times. It would take over and hour to get out of that lot after games. Never again
