CAR: Will not rush Cam Newton

Recommended Posts

Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks

The Carolina Panthers will not play QB Cam Newton extensively until he shows a firm grasp of the offense and they build a supporting cast that will enable him to have success as a starting quarterback. Newton's running ability and improvisational skills make him more of a run-first quarterback at this point. He has an exceptionally strong arm and shows solid throwing mechanics. However, sloppy footwork on occasion has led to some errant throws. Newton improved his fundamentals leading up to the NFL Draft and will need to continue to do so to be an effective drop-back passer in the NFL.

The team has a strong ground game and a group of young receivers who will develop alongside Newton. We can't see him being on the bench too long this year because of the team's lack of veteran depth at the quarterback position.

Not much of a surprise here. However, I think Newton will start some time early in the season. Marty Hurney already said he is going to bring in a Vet QB. So we may have a stop gap. But for Newton, it shouldn't take long with the strides he's making down in Florida right now.

who did bucky hear this from? sounds like this is more coming from his head rather than from someone who is actually investigating.

i think it's true that they won't start him until he has a good grasp on the playbook, but thats what he's getting with weinke right now. bucky's thoughts seem to be leaving out the work he's been doing since the draft.

Pat shut it down yesterday.

ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas still believes the Panthers will turn to Jimmy Clausen only if Cam Newton struggles in training camp.

Yasinkas concedes there "might be a little truth" to NFL.com's report that the Panthers are hesitant to throw Newton into the fire, but the team does believe there is already a competent supporting cast in place. Should Newton start, he would be at the helm of a bare-bones, run-heavy offense similar to Ben Roethlisberger's rookie season. "If (Newton) shows any grasp of the offense in training camp, he'll be the starter on opening day," concludes Yasinskas.

If the coaching staff is going to start whoever has the better grasp of the offense at the beginning, I'd see it as a problem if that isn't Cam. I mean, with all the time he's putting in improving his mechanics and learning the playbook and offense everyday, if he can't beat out Clausen in that respect (who wasn't even gotten the playbook), there might be a problem.

I know he's still just a rookie, but I'd be surprised if Newton isn't starting the first game.

no way that all of the players already on the team doesn't have it. they had plenty of time to get it before the lockout.

now, there may have been some things added to it since drafting newton, but i'm sure they all have copies of enough of it to know the system. the only ones that wouldn't are guys drafted after newton who never got to go to the facilities.

The fact that you said IMO was funny. What you said is a FACT. Not an opinion. Nothing new whatsoever

it's my opinion that this news is not news based on what we have heard from the panthers & writers who cover the team.

Well I would hope so, but I'm not so sure about that.

But if they do then that's even better.

i just remembered tweeting jimmy and him saying that he is working with the new playbook after he met with chud...and this was at the end of january.

most everyone with a contract has probably gotten a playbook and even a few (like williams) who don't have a contract at the moment, but are sure to work out a deal will have a copy as well.

there was plenty of time to do it between the time that chud was hired and the lockout began. anyone serious about playing would have made sure they had it. probably safe to say everyone who wants a job next year has the playbook, unless they were drafted after the lockout resumed.

i just wouldn't worry about the team not having the playbook, they've got it. if they didn't, i'm sure copies were probably made by people who have it.

How do you know that Clausen wasn't given a playbook? Just because he hasn't tweeted it doesn't mean he doesn't have one... Just playing the Devil's advocate.

I agree with you 100%, although I dint think it will even bs an issue

Yep I have it on inside knowledge that Don Rivera got him a Pray, I mean play book. Ron has no idea.... Muwwwhaaaa

    • Honestly, it wasn't on him last game. There are many other reasons that come before Bryce. Dave Canales is really starting to worry me. I mean there are glaring issues that can't be excused. I said back when the whole Rico/Chubba thing happened. I said right then that you cannot have a coach that handled those 4 or 5 games the way he did. I get it, most thought that he was trying to throw games, which was not wrong thinking because of how bad it was. The decisions right before half. The strict "Chubba gets this drive and Rico gets the next." It's seeming like a lot of our backups are the better talent, so he cant evaluate talent. Not calling a quarterback sneak because of size. Small quarterback have a different type of advantage, just not as good as a large quarterback, but still doable. Then he doesn't even explain why he didn't put Dalton in there (saying it would give away a quarterback sneak is...just stop). I honestly think he forgot about putting in Dalton. There are so many others that I'd have to re-watch the games to remember.  I could make a whole other post on that defensive game plan...absolutely awful. And a quick petition...see the quote above, can we please ban these weirdos and try to clean this place up. This is peak reddit right here and these losers will destroy the board. I couldn't make it though 3 pages because these morons post more than anyone else. These are the perpetual online freaking weirdos banned from getting too close to schools reddit mod types. Get these losers out of here. You got these freaks posting a ton and not answering the question OP posted ABOUT THE PANTHERS. This is supposed to be about football and this dork constantly tries to attack OP's question. Could you imagine someone in your real life group acting like this? You'd kick his butt out immediately. And you have this reddit loser trying to stop people for posting about the Panthers. Any normal person would just skip the post, but you have to remember these morons base their whole personality on their online persona. They would be banned almost everywhere else. Send him back to reddit, they will be a cancer to this place, trust me. I guarantee you he has more comments than 95% of accounts. These guys are the lowest in society so they live online. Its everything to them. You dont want that. Just read his responses. Do background check on that guy, there are younger people on this too and he probably isn't allowed to be talking to them, or be on here at all.
    • Neither of them are getting in. Cam had HOF potential but was squandered by Ron, Shula, and Gettlemen.
    • We have attempted several over the past two seasons. Maybe two successful?
