Teams with #1 Picks and their record the next Season

Recommended Posts

The biggest differences between the 2002 team and now are:

1. We are playing in by far the best and toughest division (2002 not so much)

2. We had a vet QB in 2002....now not so much.

Is there an outside chance at 7 or so wins....sure. We do have a lot of talent and much will depend on how Newton plays.

I still think that 5-6 wins is far more likely.....but I do like your optimism.

The NFC South in 2002 was arguably the toughest division in football. It had three teams above 500, and the fourth place team (us) had a top notch defense. Tampa won the Superbowl, and Atlanta was a wildcard team that went to Green Bay and beat the division champs on the wildcard weekend. I doubt the NFC south will be that good this year.

While I agree the lockout is not helping us. Newton is doing all he can to learn our playbook. I am sure other members of our offense have the playbook and are learning their role as well.

If training camp starts on time. I believe we will come along just fine.

Like I said in the opening post. IF.....IF.....IF we go 2-2 out of the gate. I think offense and defense will start to gel and we will be in the hunt.

    • I mean, if Moore really wants out, then it would behoove the Bears to make it happen sooner than later. X is a lot younger and cheaper, and may be a better fit for Johnson's musings than a disgruntled, unnecessary, overpaid vet. If they can dump his salary and maybe get a fourth or so in return, it may be worth it to them. As for development, I'm not concerned. You're talking about a seeming bust, a day three guy and a UDFA. They are developing relative to their ceilings. I doubt any of them will ever command the coverage, money, or the respect that Moore has acquired. He's a tier above them. Yes, even X.
    • IMO, if Ceedee plays against us, the game probably goes the other way. Same with Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins. Our team just isn't designed to beat teams with two high level receivers like that. But when you look at the league, how many teams really have two guys of that caliber?  There's nothing wrong with defensive adjustments, but sometimes I think a lot of fans want Evero to call a different play like a game on madden, and defensive football just isn't like that. That said, I thought we did a much better job this season against the Cowboys of flipping Jaycee and at least making them work for it, opposed to last season when they literally just lined CeeDee up on the other side of the field every single snap.  For us to just straight up switch to consistent man coverage, or a different zone, or whatever, we likely would consistently need different personnel on the field. Doing it a few times a game is a gamble and can work, but if we consistently run man coverage against the Cowboys, eventually a RB is going to beat a linebacker, or something of that nature with our personnel. Part of the reason Evero likes this scheme is that, while we have our defaults and presets, what we do is very multiple, and you can do a lot of different things pre and post snap. We are a challenging defense to read. But as you said, if guys are getting beat, it doesn't really matter what you call.
