Mark Jones - please re-sign him

I just read off of Carolinagrowl that we still haven't signed Mark Jones yet. Does anyone else think he's a priority? I certainly do. This guy put us in great field position to win games last year, especially the Green Bay game.

Hangartner becomes an unrestricted free agent tonight at midnight along with six other former teammates – returner Mark Jones, long snapper Jason Kyle, offensive tackle Frank Omiyale, linebackers Adam Seward and Donte Curry and defensive tackle Darwin Walker.

We really don't need him though. I hope they cut him, we have Rhyne robinson and the new kid Kenny Moore, Kenny is actually a great player and will be cheaper than Mark Jones

BTW - he may have helped in a few games but he's not explosive enough of a player, IMO

Have any of those players proven anything yet?

Maybe not, but Mark Jones will cost more because he has more years in the NFL, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the Panthers cut him because of money and because of the potential they have in a return man in Kenny and\or Rhyne

You're right. Even though Ryne was coming on strong at the end of the 2007 season, Mark Jones played well enough this year to secure at the very least the return man spot. Of course, the return man will also be a receiver on game day, as we won't want to waste a roster spot with someone who is just a return man.

I wanted to see what Moore could do as well, but I just don't see it happening. For that matter, Carter will probably be gone as well.

Next year, barring any surprise draft picks or free agency acquisitions, I expect our receiver corps to look like this:

1. Smith

2. Muhammad

3. Jarrett

4. Robinson

5. Jones

The Robinson and Jones training camp battle, assuming Jones stays, should be an interesting one.

Mark Jones is a decent KR at best. Our KR game has been so bad for so long it has blinded us. He has the vision of a great KR but no quickness, moves or speed of a great one. He can't even juke or out run the kicker. If we keep him I can live with it but, I would love for someone else to step up.

Decent, reliable, non-spectacular. In other words, a Fox type player, ala Nick Goings.

The guy isn't going to break the bank. I don't care how long he's been in the league. His only talent is returning the ball. So if you think he's going to command a 10 mil/2 year contract, you're kidding yourself.

Since that's out of the way, I would rather have a top 5 PR than to crown 2 returners who have to still prove themselves. What kind of sense does that make?

Top 5 returner in the league. And you think he's decent? You are so focused on him not juking a kicker that you either don't know, or fail to remember, he was top 5 in the league at his position.

So for all those who have "quickness, moves, and speed" that you insist we need, he did better than 27 other guys who have that great quality you think you must have. The one thing they don't have are his stats. So screw the rest, pay the man and put him in.

IF, and that's, IF... Robinson shows up and is better, put him in. But until then, don't go tying your hands behind your back before you size up your competition.

    • Don't take this personal, but anyone who watches pregame or game broadcast on any of the four major networks & can't point out a dozen "experts" that Luke would do a better job than, is just not paying attention. IMO
    • overall agree on the draft grade as a whole on on each pick, but every time I read (and I have read it more than once) that we "gave up two firsts" for Bryce, I am confused. We gave up the 2024 first, but we swapped 2023 firsts, so we didn't give up anything there. We did give up our former first rounder in DJ, but I don't think thats what you mean as one of the "firsts" we gave up.
    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
