Who will be our week one starter

Happy Panther

You guys did see the first pre-season game, right? DA sucked.

Yes he had the TD to Pilares (who did the tough part), but he would have been picked twice had decent CB's been in the game at that point.

Add in that even though Cam had a bad practice last night, DA's was even worse.

I could see Clausen or Newton, but DA? I just don't see it.

Cam has to be. If this guy is gonna be the face of the franchise you gotta march him out week one. Pickles and DA aren't gonna put butts in the seats or make anyone forget about Cam anytime soon. If Pickles showed flashes of anything last year I doubt we draft Cam. DA had a team Warner took to a superbowl and did jack. Fug this "not ready" crap, the kid will either rise up to it or fail. We can't afford to dick around with scrubs and baby the kid. Adversity won't break Cam if he is for real, didnt hurt Peyton, Troy, or Big Ben. I might be wrong but I think RR has the guts to do it.

And you know what haters, you can't undraft him. Like Ric Flair said "like it or don't like it, learn to love it cause it's the best thing going today ....Wooooooooooo!!!!!!!

WRONG. Just because you think he is the future and the face of the franchise, you do NOT throw him out there if he is not ready.

I trust that Rivera, Chud, and Shula will make the correct decision. That is what they are paid for.

If they send him out there to only "put butts in the seats", they should all be fired. Because that is terrible coaching.

Ryan is the face of the Falcons franchise and he started right away. Rogers is the face of the Packers franchise and they let him develop.

There is no right answer....which is why I will defer to the coaches.

I just only hope that sending him out there too soon does not leave us with a Harrington...or Carr...or Leaf.

With his personality and the lack of a good veteran why would you not? My take on the failed guys is they were gonna fail regardless. Adversity is something good players must overcome, if he can't cut it week 1 likely he can't cut it week 4 or 6 either

You missed my point entirely.

I did not say that Cam should not be the starter. I just said that you logic of why he should be the starter is massively flawed.

He should be named the starter if his on the field play earns him the position.

Only time will tell.

I am very interested to see how this plays out in the preseason.

Earning it is all well and good but that isn't how the world works. If he looks like he can play, even if Pickles looks a lil better at 1st, you start him IMO. Sorry, but butts in seats is the business side of things. If he looks Zod awful you let him sit(I don't see it happening).

Winning cures the butts in the seats, i know it's a business, BUT do you see the Jaguars naming Blaine Gabbert the starter over David Garrard???? do you see the Broncos naming The Golden Calf of Bristol the starter over Kyle Orton. the best player should play no matter what. now will it be Cam, maybe, will it not be, maybe, Cam WILL start sometime this year, dont worry about that, but saying he should start just to put butts in the seats is NOT how you build a sports franchise, you build it on winning and playing the best players even if they arent popular and like if that was how the "world works" then The Golden Calf of Bristol would be starting right now and so would Blaine Gabbert because both those franchises want to see their new QBs playing. The Golden Calf of Bristol has this "love/hate fest" (like Cam does) and Gabbert is a fresh face that people in Jacksonville love and they are tired of inconisistant Garrard, but both arent ready to start and are backing up, even if their ticket sales arent great, the coaches are wanting to win games.

    • In another post, Snow says about three years before you can properly grade a rookie class.  Sounds about right…
    • And this reiterates why I don’t want a Young contract extension. Please let us find another QB.
    • Oh, the high expectations after a draft. Keep your expectations low, people. Darin Gantt's latest "Ask The Old Guy" gives life to one of those lessons about pro football reality as a fan: "Rasheed Walker was a three-year starter at left tackle for the Packers, so Freeling is going to have to work. Hunter's got another big 'un in front of him in Bobby Brown III and a different kind of defensive tackle in Tershawn Wharton. Chris Brazzell II's got a lot of traffic at his position. Zakee Wheatley has to be better than the chronically underappreciated Nick Scott, and Sam Hecht is a fifth-round rookie at the hardest position on the line to play, who probably doesn't have immediate positional flexibility, and a solid free agent addition in Luke Fortner in front of him. "Fans generally love their draft class as soon as it arrives, because there is no evidence to the contrary yet. Once guys get on the field, the reality begins to creep in, and the seasoned among you remember that if you get three or four good players out of a draft, that was an amazing draft." https://www.panthers.com/news/ask-the-old-guy-things-looking-up-after-the-draft-monroe-freeling-luke-kuechly-bryce-young-derrick-brown Don't get crazy. Winning the draft (or the offseason BTW) on paper always leads to good feelings and great expectations, especially when you seemingly succeeded the season before, but let's remember that the Panthers are very much a work in progress. Team building takes time. If we get a couple of starters out of the draft, it's a good draft, but three or four would be an amazing draft, and anything more than that is actually sensational--even if entails a few multiple high end rotational players along with three starters. Moreover, kind of within that same vein, the coaches have to let the kids off the chain. Remember the coach-speak of past coaches about competition that is anything but because coaches have their notions about veteran experience? Not saying that they're necessarily wrong, but sometimes I think their reluctance to put the young guys out there is based somewhat in dogma or possibly fear because big stakes are on the line (e.g., their jobs). It can be frustrating to say the least, but the coaches are supposed to know best. Again, I say all of this so that we can remember to temper expectations and keep them within the realm of reality. It's like telling your mind to think of it as something akin to under-promising and over-delivering. Leave room to be pleasantly surprised for the best case scenario, but be cognizant that that rarely happens. I would think at this point, most of us should be able to recognize growth when we see it, and sometimes that growth doesn't manifest itself in the form of immediate supremacy, but a setting of the stage for long term dominance for years to come. It seems like we're on track for an emergence by 2028 or 2029. We still have huge questions, but by 2029, hopefully we will take our seat at the table of the perennial contenders in the NFL.
