Anderson gets 1 year deal, and wears #3

Recommended Posts

I've been a super duper Panthers fan ever since 11pm eastern time when I found out Anderson got signed for a year.

My guess is Anderson will start the season. He'll do better than any QB you had last year, that's not saying a lot, and the team will do better, that's still not saying a lot.

I'd say odds are pretty good Newton starts by game 9 if the team is not in contention for a playoff spot.

Anderson got a raw deal in Cleveland, and Chud knows it. Cleveland's ownership and fans were enamored with Quinn, and DA started '08 playing with a concussion that under today's rules would have kept him sidelined for at least an additional week or two.

Well, Newton ain't Quinn. I'm excited to see what Newton can do at the pro level, I expect a fabulous carrer out of him, but he's not ready unless he's just plain amazing. 2 seasons ago he was playing against junior college players.

Bringing in Anderson was a smart move for the team, and a smart move for Anderson. My guess is he'll get a lot more interest once he performs reasonably well compared to what has been shown from Panther QBs lately (notice some of them are still gettiing picked up elsewhere).

I watched both Anderson and Moore in college, Anderson's the better QB, Moore played with a better line in front of him. Always thought that if Anderson had Moore's line in front of him he'd have done much better... this year I may get the opportunity to see if I'm right.

Anderson's weak areas are screens, touch within 10 yards, and red zone play. I don't think he'll ever be good at screens, if you've got good receivers and tight ends that can actually catch the touch might not be that big of an issue, and if they're smart they should give Newton a large role in the red zone to break him in. Anderson will do just fine between the 20's and will open up a lot of room for the running game and the long ball.

Newton will probably be the guy next year and the future, unless somehow the team gets deep in the playoffs under Anderson this year, but needs some seasoning. Picking up Anderson at this point is a smart thing, I wouldn't expect spectacular numbers out of him, but it'll be a nice improvement over last season.
