used to be that way, but with the new CBA i'm not sure.

thats a good point but I don't think this was one of the changes in the CBA..maybe minor things regarding this but I think the overall concept of paying it all this year and spreading the cap hit is generally the same.

Whats crazy is us falcon fans just found out that we was only offering Charles Johnson 7 mil a year (what our GM value LE's) .... How did the Panthers FO get to 12+ mil a year ? We was their main competition for CJ.

I get spending money on your own talent which is smart... Plus you guys had to spend the money...I thought we was in a bidding war with you guys (the reason why johnson got so much)

How does the bonuses count towards the cap? I didn't think the signing bonus figured into the cap number itself???

It does over the life of the contract.

"Say, for example, a player wants a seven-year, $60-million contract. Let's say that the owner decides to give that player an $11-million signing bonus, which is all paid out in the first year but gets factored into the cap as prorated over the course of the seven-year contract ($11-million / 7 years = $1.57-million per year)."

Signing bonus are prorated over the life of the contract.

Example: 20 millon dollar signing bonus on a 4 year contract will add 5 millon dollars to the players base salary each season, which would be the total cap hit.

They may have been the number they wanted to enter the talks with but i am sure they were willing to go higher as they negotiated and tried to get him......JR just threw down the cash and prevented ATL from bothering trying.
