Not to be the bearer of bad news, but if you actually look at the throws that Anderson made in his probowl season, it was not as radically different as the ones Clausen threw last year - the results, sure, very different. Attempt selection, though, was not nearly as large a gap as one would expect going from "Checkdown King" to "Vertical Offense." I'm not saying this is going to be the same old offense... It won't be... at all. But don't expect it to necessarily be San Diego reborn. We've got a stable of amazing running backs(not to mention a QB we clearly want to run), and if we don't run them, I'd be astonished. Some of this board are going to cry holy hell if we aren't airing it out every down I suspect, but our offense is going to be strong and balanced in that it will be capable of running or (hopefully) passing.

ultimately Jimmy's problem is likely confidence... maybe in his arm, maybe his receivers... maybe just in himself...

it does seem like he and Cam are both responding to each other, though. I don't care if Jimmy can't heave the ball 50 yards on his knees, as long as he can spread the defense out a bit... and we won't really know if he can do that until game time. The better he plays, the better Cam will have to play to replace him - and if Cam is half of what he says he is, he'll work his ass off to win his spot as the #1. I'm looking forward to some actual game time out of both of the guys, either way.

I was comparing the way the offense was being reported during last years Training Camp to what was the ultimate offensive (both meanings apply) product at Fan Fest and the season.

Not comparing this offense to last regime's offense.

But your points are well taken and I don't disagree with anything you said :)

Agreed.

From what I am reading, I am still nervous with Cam. He seems to have the guts to make the deep throws. However, he is being careless and cavalier. If he keeps that up in the season, he is going to be an interception machine.

Clausen needs to take more chances.....CAm needs to ratchet it back and understand that the defenses he will be playing against are 100X better than ANYTHING he has ever seen.

Still hope that one steps up and distances himself.

Manning was an interception machine his rookie year.

Why must we have this same argument everyday? Stop trying to compare a #1 overall pick to a 2nd rounder. If I have to tell you the difference, then you don't know the workings of the NFL. Pro Sports for that matter!

Please enlighten me "Oh Idiot One".....

My point is that people need patience with 99% of rookie QB's....not just the ones that they WANT to be successful.

Evaluating JC from last year is a mistake. He was thrown into the worst possible situation. I guarantee you that if it had been Cam playing last year, the results would have been the same.

I am not making a case for or against JC....just that evaluating him solely by last year is ridiculous.

If people would stop slurping on Cam's nuts long enough to understand this, we would all be more enlightened.

Agreed.

My comment was not an evaluation of Cam's future in the NFL. Just that his style makes me nervous for THIS season.

I think that adding a solid CB to this team and we are a contender.

We have stud RB's....solid WR's...great TE's....a great OLine....nasty LB's.....solid DLine (Hardy and Johnson are going to get after it, and McClain looks like a beast).

Add solid QB play and double digit wins are not out of the question.

.

DA - 31% of his completions were 10 yards + downfield

Jimmy - 17% of his completions were 10 yards + downfield

Most of DA's production (yards/TD) came from throws 10+ yards downfield

Most of Jimmy's production (yards/TD) came from throws less than 10 yards

How is that not radically different? Sorry, but I respectfully disagree with your post.

I am not disputing these stats at all. But where the heck did you find these stats??

espn does a good job on the players stat pages.....you have to go to "splits".

http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/8627/year/2007/derek-anderson

http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/13198/jimmy-clausen

"by pass play" shows where the ball was thrown in terms of distance downfield......then you have to do a little math on your own to get those percentages I threw out.

Great find, one thing that jumped out at me was the margin of victory stats.

He actually did a decent job when we lost by 7 or less, compared to blowouts where people might think he "boosted" his stats.

Really wasn't trying to knock you, just tired of the whole Cam Vs Clausen threads.

When you're the number #1 overall pick, you're going to be handed the keys eventually. Now what you do with them, is to be determined.

The same people that's still holding out hope for Clausen, didn't want use to draft Cam in the first place, and I think it's pathetic.

Edwards for #2? must be doing more than showing flashes out there..

his athletic ability makes him a huge mismatch.. hope to see him dominate in the slot..

Edwards is playing well in a controlled environment.

Get him in a real game with real bullets then it will be reality check time!!!

If they thought this highly of him, Nanee wouldn't have been brought in.

Naane is only on a 1 year contract. Outside of Smitty, our next 4 guys are a rookie and 3 2nd year guys. Need some vet leadership and experience in the WR group.

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
