Comments on Cam from Giants

The reason Cam's performance was impressive was not due to stats or how he overtly did. It showed how much he has progressed, and that he is working on his basics to become our franchise QB. He is a spread QB who likes to run, but he spent the entire game in the pocket, going from under center. He just needs to adjust to the game a bit more, but already he is looking good.

This. Anyone happen to catch the Chargers/Seahawks game the other day?

Tavarais Jackson still can't read a defense, still can't find his check down's and therefore, still tries to run on every play. Cam looked years ahead of him in poise in the pocket.

Very, very encouraged by what I saw from Cam.

I think the knocks on Cam are a bit too premature, just as the prejudices against Jimmy are a bit too harsh. 2010 was an anomaly, a nightmare that all of us should be glad to wake up from. We have two young QBs who are trying to show they have the desire and work ethic to make it in the pros. We have coaches willing to play to their strengths, and do things to mitigate their weaknesses. We have healthy offensive weapons that are providing them the tools to learn what they must to perform as expected. I think it's not realistic to expect pro-bowl performances (or even mid-level veteran performances) out of Cam and JC at this point. They just aren't that far along the learning curve. But I do recognize this: Jimmy is worlds better than he was last year, and that speaks well of his determination to find his place in the NFL; and Cam has the physical talents to become one of the best in the league - and the sheer joy he takes at being on the field is infectious. I for one applaud them both, and wish them the best.

I couldn't have said it better myself great post. Sometimes it seems that the guys in here get so emotionally involved with a player they lose sight of whats best for the team. I hope they both take off and we get good value out of one and win the Superbowl with the other. It doesn't matter which one as long as the end result is the same.

anyone else think the coaching staff told cam not to take off, to just work on his pocket passing game? i think cam will be a pretty decent pocket passer once he STOPS THROWING OFF HIS BACK FOOT WHEN HE DOESNT NEED TO! tho i'll just chalk those throws up to first nfl game jitters.

Of course they did - What they need to see / work on in the preseason is not his ability to run around and make conerbacks look silly it's his pocket presence and his ability to operate under center. I wouldn't expect to see a lot of him taking off and running this early on.

I am proud of Cam trying to stay pocket passer. But at the same time he has skills he needs to use. Learning when to take off is going to be the key, but again kudos to the kid for trying to learn to be a QB first.

especially on 3rd & short

When Cam was in HS, he was criticized by the college scouts for not running enough, so I don't know why so many people assume that he wants to run first and has to be held back. A lot of his college runs were called by the coaching staff too, so it's not like he just decided to run no matter what.

he's always been a passer first... you can really tell who doesn't understand football when they make drastic claims based on what they thought they saw last year..

Stats aside, I thought he looked really poised and composed in the pocket, despite being blitz repeatedly. And having a poo Oline to work with at that point. It was his first action against another team in the NFL, those expecting him to light it up are crazy. It's the little things.

    • I think you have to factor in that we're still not an attractive proposition for Head Coaches. You're not getting the cream of the crop if you fire Canales a year after winning the NFC South, especially considering the situation he walked into.
    • Yeah, I was about to say I hope he's doing okay health-wise because he's not looking good in that pic.
    • Honestly, I dont  think he should be on the hot seat yet. A bad start to next year, then yes. Despite our mistakes on play calling this past season, we played better than anticipated overall. Bryce showed improvement and maturity (although still not nowhere close to our expectations). Better record and 2-15 to 5-12 to 8-9. Despite what we feel the stats dont lie we are improving by 3 wins a year. Could 11-6 be our expectation. That's a high bar but at the rate we are going, thats what its looking like. We all want to see a 5-12 to a 13-4 record but we are methodically moving up. Success doesnt happen overnight (well in most cases).  IMO we are struggling mostly on the defensive end. LB and edge are our biggest weakness. I see Bryce making improvements (even though I was a Bryce hater) next year. Biggest concern is LT on offense. How to fix this? We need a big name edge or to trade up and get a big name edge or LB and pick up one in FA and draft one. Also if in the 3rd we can pick up a TE. Dont know if Sanders is the answer or Tremble (even though I love Trembles blocking and power after the catch). If these two can get their footwork together they would be great. Maybe all they need is a better TE coach. And if Brooks can stay healthy and be the back we thought he could be, man that would be great
