2010 QB Controversy in Carolina?

Well, is there a controversy if there is no QBs at all? That is the situation the Panthers are looking at in 2010. All three of the current QBs on roster, Jake Delhomme, Josh McCown and Matt Moore, are all set to become free agents at the begining of the 2010 league year. This would be the same league year that would be the first uncapped year in over 15 years in the NFL.

Some posters have opined as to Delhomme extending his contract this offseason to open up some more cap space. This doesn't seem to be a real possibility in my opinion as Delhomme would be much wiser to wait until the uncapped year, or at least until the CBA is extended, to extend or sign a new contract. Currently, Delhomme's salary cap number is the highest on the team except for Pepper's cap number. Some might find this to be surprising as even the most vavorable Delhomme fans would lable him as a above average QB at best. That is however the going rate for average, long term QBs in the NFL and that number most probably isn't going to decrease.

The other two QBs, Moore and McCown, could also be waiting for a big payday. Moore is a rarity in the NFL; a backup who has a winning record as a starter. McCown is more of a typical backup having started some games but with very limited success. The Panthers seem to like both of these players and would probably like to keep both on the roster for some time.

And that is where the controversy comes into play. Who is the starting QB for the Panthers after 2009? Delhomme very well could play his chances like Warner did this offseason but would the Panthers pony up the cash like the Cards did?

Which leads me to another question...could the controversy begin sooner? Many fans feel that Moore is the future of the team. He has the arm, size and based on his previous work during the 2007 season he has the moxy to be a successful QB in the NFL. With 2010 being such as huge question mark at the QB position could the Panthers actually open up the competition for Moore to take the spot as starter this season?

If Delhomme is jockying for more money in 2010, the Panthers seemingly unvavering love for Delhomme could take a turn towards the "future." As the front office have undoubtablly realized with the Peppers situation, star players that seem to be embeded into the team may not be as loyal as once thought. Delhomme could jocky himself into a backup role just as quickly as he took the starting role in 2003. Or if the Panthers feel so inclined Delhomme could become a cap casuality before training camp even begins with Moore waiting in the wings, with his winning record as a starter in hand.

Of course all of this could become mute very quickley if Delhomme ends up extending sometime between now and the draft. That would be just the type of gesture that would give the front office the trust to continue the Delhomme era for at least a couple more years. A move that would be controversal in its own rights, drawing the anti-Delhomme base to become even more vocal about the need for an upgrade.

No matter what there seems to be a controversy headed to the QB position in Carolina within the next year. Who finally emerges as the starter may end up being the savior or just as easily end up becoming the sacrifice. Hopefully the front office with be able to imply their inside information that fans are not prevy to to determine the best course of action and if need be cut a player loose maybe a year to early instead of a year, and several millions of dollars, to late.

they'll all go and we will start The Golden Calf of Bristol at QB. We will be the fail this season because we lost our long snapper and have this way tough schedule and have no depth what so ever. Fox and Hurney will be gone and to replace them we will have Cowher as both. It must happen. :rolleyes:

I'm not sure we keep Moore.

I think we will keep McCown and with in the next couple of months we will probably extend Delhomme.

I'd love for Moore to be our QB...once he shows me he can. Starting three games proves nothing.

What exactly would "show you he can?" If starting in and winning two of those three games doesn't give you confidence then what would? I'm not sure what you are trying to say other than you are not sold yet on Moore.

im not 100 percent sold on him, i wana see how hes developed since 07. but i think he is our future qb, and i think hes better than anyone we could get in the draft this year.

This season will be the telling point. If Jake stinks and they dont put either Moore or McCown in expect new blood in 2010.

Jake wont stink, he didnt stink this year. Were an 11-12 win team with delhomme under center. He had ONE awful game. But part of that had to do with playcalling, you cant come out and run the ball 9 times and excpect the pass to work. We could of ran all over AZ we just gave up on it wayyy to early.

How about play more games? I know there is a reason he hasn't but one of his wins was against a team already in the Playoffs, another was a loss against a good team. The other win was agianst New Orleans. I bet a handful of backups could have had similar results. Some of you treat his 2-1 record like he's the next coming of Christ.

He has shown me he can be a GREAT backup. That is it...so far.

I excpet that this is the year they really look to the draft for a young qb. I really love the idea of Pat White in the 4th round. I know that he isnt a John Fox kinda qb, but I think that he is that good of a qb that he can be whatever Fox wants him to be.

nothing against pat white, hes a great athlete. but IMO hes not gonna be a good nfl qb. my reason behind this is if u look at the top qbs in the league today there know for there rifle arm, and bein able to thread the needle. IMO we dont want a qb that alot of people think might be better playin wr. he could prove me wrong, and if he does great. but i thnk hes got bust written all over him

Lets not forget how banged up the line was in 2007 during those games Moore played.

We also had fumbling Foster as our running back.

Oh yeah...we also had good for nothing Colbert and Drew Carter.

With that bunch on the field...I say Moore looked pretty good

      Nobody is giving up a 4th rounder for a backup QB And anyone who needs a starter badly enough to where Bryce would then be their starter, is such a bad team that they're not giving up a pick likely to be about pick 105ish overall, instead of just dealing with a bad QB situation for a season and then drafting one in a loaded QB draft next year. I'm looking through all the teams right now and can't think of a single one that would be willing to part with anything better than a 6th rounder. Barring injuries (and excluding the Panthers), there look to be 10 teams who don't know with 100% certainty who their starting QB will be in 2027... Dolphins, Jets, Browns, Steelers, Vikings, Colts, Saints, Falcons, Cardinals, and Rams. Of those 10...  The Rams know it will be Stafford or Simpson.  The Saints more than likely will be sticking with Shough unless he takes a huge step backwards.  So neither are giving up any draft picks for Bryce right now, just wouldn't make sense for either. Down to 8 Given their current QB situation of having multiple QBs they already need to evaluate between this year, the Browns (Shedeur/Watson), Vikings (Kyler/JJ), Colts (Jones/Richardson/Leonard), and Falcons (Penix/Tua), wouldn't be giving up a 4th (or maybe any pick) to bring in another QB to muddy the waters even more. Down to 4 Dolphins just signed Willis and wouldn't want to bring in another small Alabama QB who has struggled after just dumping Tua instead of just rolling with Ewers as the backup.   That then leaves the Steelers, Cardinals, and Jets left as it's clear none of them have any idea who their 2027 could be as of right now.  But the Steelers would for sure rather just see what one of the 2 QB's they drafted in the last 2 drafts could become than give up a mid round pick for Bryce.  Same goes for the Cardinals in taking Beck this past weekend. The Jets would be the most likely team to even consider taking him on, but I think it seems very apparent right now given them rolling with Geno and now talk of bringing in Wilson to be his backup, they're punting on QB this year to draft someone next year, so why give up even a mid round pick for Bryce?

      Honestly I am not sure Pickett couldn’t step in for him. But I don’t see a clear easy upgrade and we are not KC with Alex Smith we are a team that hadn’t done poo for almost ten years and just made the playoffs. And looked good in the game. That stadium atmosphere on that day…. you know Tepper ate that poo up. Not one drink has been thrown in a while.  You had better make sure if you replaced him after that that you had a sure fire upgrade.

      Makes sense. If Bryce is ass this year, we are probably drafting our new QB next draft and sitting him behind Bryce for a year
