most overrated player in NFL history

top dawg

Recommended Posts

are you serious?

not only did he have pretty stellar production in 2008, but he is a one of a kind personality, the heart and soul of their defense, the team captain, and can diagnose a play better than anyone in the league.

i mean honestly i'd say right now it's peppers.

He's a good LB but racks up most of his stats by jumping on a ballcarrier that already is being dragged down by two other guys.

And just because someone knows how to do the chicken dance and start a prayer circle when the camera's on him doesn't make him the heart and soul. The guy's faker than Benny Hinn.

He's good, probably a top 10 MLB, but nowhere near great. Judging by his incentive laden contract offer, NFL GM's agree.

Most overrated of all time? Franco Harris.

Most overrated now? Peppers, though it kills me to say that.

Biggest draft bust? Atlanta drafted a defensive lineman first overall sometime in the 80s. Andrae Bruce or something like that. Never did crap in the NFL. First pick overall in the draft.

if you can't even remember his name for sure he's not the biggest draft bust of all time

When you talk about Namath you have to remember that his knees were shot before he even got to the NFL. He could barely walk and running was impossible. The teams that he had to work with were not made up of players anybody can remember either. Broadway Joe was a character, made a name for himself at Alabama playing for Bear Bryant, signed a $400,000 contract (which was unheard of at the time) with the Jets (who were pretty much unheard of) and made sure he stayed in the news by being seen in the hot night spots and with lots of hot women. Namath did just about all he could do with what he had to work with physically and team wise. Overrated? I'm not sure.

Like I said, he's the captain of my "all-overrated" team.

Here's how it's shaping up so far:

QB - Joe Namath

RB - Ricky Williams

FB - Mike Alsott

WR - Keyshawn Johnson

WR - Randy Moss

TE - Jeremy Shockey

DT - Chris Hovan

DT - William Perry

CB - DeAngelo Hall

LB - Ray Lewis

LB - Brian Bosworth

S - Roy Williams

I agree 100%. Plus I have a hard time considering a guy that great of a leader when they whine to the media like Ray Ray has done over and over.

Wahhhh I need a better DL in front of me...wahhhh I need a real offense wahhh. SHUT UP AND PLAY FOOTBALL RAY RAY.

Tackle stats are super subjective anyway because as Gosselin pointed out in detail awhile ago, most teams keep their own stats and are ...ummm...generous to their guys.

Namath is the first name that always pops into my head when someone asks most overrated of all time though. When I went to the HOF in2007, I was seriously thinking of trying to remove his bust...lol

    • Thielen was a "dawg" like Dan Morgan likes to say. And they replaced him with puppies.  The analytics are probably saying this is more targets for younger receivers they are hoping to develop, specifically the first round pick from 2025. The eye test is going to show a very inexperienced group of WRs that are going to have some serious growing pains, for a 3rd year QB who has not yet proven to be the guy going forward.  It's crazy how in the literal first game of his NFL career, Cam Newton showed everyone he was a star QB and there was never any doubt about that. It almost didn't even matter who was around him, although he definitely had a serious lack of talent at WR for most of his career. Bryce is going into his third season and there is still a ton of doubt, and who is around him is seen as crucial for him to have success. I don't like it.
    • Everyone says AT was old and slow but the one thing he could do consistently was get separation. That takes skill and it's been a huge issue in our WR for years. And while Moore may be a great locker room guy and our WR coach may be a 12 year vet, he's not playing in the game. Vets like AT do what they do because they can see things others don't and exploit it. The DB interview I mentioned before was with Stephon Gilmore after his DPOY season. He was pulling the younger DBs aside showing them things you wouldn't even think you'd be able to tell from the way the receiver was standing.  Seeing what a DB or LB is biting on in game that can give you that half step advantage is huge and we don't have that experience in our WR group right now and I think it could end up hurting us. None of our receivers have lined up against NFL corners successfully on a regular basis. Having someone that can walk over and give you a tip to get a half yard separation can be a difference maker.
