If the OLine is so bad...

Remember when we had all those sacks in spring training last year? it wasn't because our dline was awesome. OLines typically struggle at the beginning of the year. We have talented guys, and they'll get it together. It's not helping that we have a rookie QB in there that doesn't know how to adjust them, or read a defense and let them know what he sees. The bad line play is more a result of miscomunication than having bad players. They'll get it together by week 3 or 4.

Freeman was sacked just 19 times in the first year, whereas in one more game Clausen was sacked an additional 13 times (313 to 344 dropbacks respectively). Our OLine is basically exactly the same as it was last year, so it's likely things won't change significantly.

If Clausen had the mobility of Freeman I'm sure those sack numbers would have been less.

With Cam's mobility atleast he has the chance to buy time and or escape the pocket to pick up positive yards with Clausen all we would be getting is a sack or hurried checkdown.

Anybody who has played any organized sports knows that the best practice is real experience, you can practice that left hook and jab all night and day long, it isn't until you're in the ring with a guy who is trying to knock your block off, that you realize what works for you and what doesn't.

yeah, the Bengal OL looked SO behind.

also, Cam has displayed great pocket awareness in terms of feeling pressure overall during the preseason.

and our highest paid C in the NFL is calling the protections........maybe he doesn't deserve more than the guy in NY.

This is what fans don't understand about running an offense. I don't care how bad your O-line is, if you got a guy that can change up the snap count and call out protection schemes on the fly, your O-line will be decent enough to win. Peyton Manning doesn't have a great O-line, but the guy know how to work it regardless of who is blocking for him. Tom Brady can maneuver a pocket better than a puppeteer handles his puppets.

Yet if all your QB does is go up to the center and say "Down, set, hut!", you might as well give a green light for opposing defenses to light you up. Cam might as well say "Ready, set, go"! It's as if the opposing defense is in the huddle when the play is called. If yall don't believe me, go look at Cam's play. Look at the obvious show of blitz by the Bengals, that Cam failed to notice. (It was that play where the safety sacked him.

Gross, Wharton, and Kalil looked scared for their lives last night. We are talking about established guys! Forget Bernadea, forget Williams, our established guys looked like JV players going against a putrid Bengals defense. That's not just bad O-line play, that is bad QB playcalling. Put in the vet or we will be drafting Luck next year.

Sorry but Rookie QBs rarely if at all come out calling protections. There are a bunch of teams that adjust for this though. The Steelers did it with Big Ben, The Jets did it with Mark Sanchez, and the Ravens did it with Joe Flacco. Its not uncommon for QBs to go threw the 2nd whole season not calling protections because its still new to them and Defenses are so complex. That does not mean though they will never learn it, it just means the NFL is not a cake league.

Its the same reason John Fox did not like to develop QBs because they take time to progress and Vets already are what they are.

So you think they just send the Qb out there and say 'no matter what they show, don't change anything'.

    • I mean, you probably should've waited after the season is over before "going there," that way we we'd have four more games of comparison and discussion. Don't get me wrong, I occasionally go out on a limb, but Bryce just had his best game and has given people hope (which could realistically be false hope), and Shedeur just doesn't have that many games under his belt (even if he does look promising), one of them being against the Titans. No harm in being patient and letting things play out.  If you noticed, Tepper seems to be taking a wait-and-see attitude, and he didn't mention Bryce in the clip in the other thread. I'm still highly skeptical of Bryce (and glad that Sanders has shown an ounce of success), but the reality is that we have to let things play out. The Sanders train left long ago (if it was even here). But,there are more realistic options if Bryce turns back into a frog.
    • imagine thinking that talking about our next opponent is "gassing up" someone.... and then lying about basic info because it's not flattering to the league's worst starting QB since he arrived.  as a starter he is 2-3 (just a fact) as a starter vs Bryce this year pass yards per game - Shough rush yards per game - Shough comp % - Shough  QB rating - Shough yards/per attempt - Shough and Shough is only good for a 2nd year rookie thrust into the gig on a bad team.   He is getting graded on a curve of what he is.  And he won the last head to head vs us, and looked like the best QB on the field that day.   there are a billion red flags when it comes to Bryce Young.  This is just another.
    • Imagine gassing up a 2-4 QB for a terrible division rival with stats worse than our QB in every category except raw yards per game
