Another Peppers situation

Actually that scenario doesn't make much sense unless we really wanted to keep Peppers and were refusing to negotiate with other teams. Poison pills are very rarely used since the Seattle/Minny battle with Hutchinson and Burleson in 2006. It is frowned on by the league although still legal.

But if you really want Peppers instead of waiting until July and then surrendering the 2 1sts for 2010 and 2011 and inserting a poison pill, why not negotiate for a 1st and perhaps a 2nd and third close to the draft or even during the draft when Hurney would be more incented to take less than 2 1sts. Honestly I bet Hurney would be fine with 2 firsts whether it started this year or started next year. I really doubt that he wants Peppers at all costs no matter what. And a first rounder while nice this year wouldn't necessarily be used for a DE. Plus how many DEs picked last year started and played well for their teams in 2008? If Peppers goes in July we have roughly the same hole we would have if he leaves in March. From what I can see there are not many if any first round DEs who could come in and would be better than Charles Johnson will be this year. Particularly the further down the first round we would pick.

It does make sence if there is no salary cap in 2010 and 2011. 1st round draft picks will be able to make some serious money in an uncapped league just like they do in MLB. Some team like the Patriots would probably rather not have those two picks in those years but would still like to keep the one from this year while the salary cap is still in effect. According to my memory, if a team does sign Peppers before this years draft then they would be forced to give up this year's first, if they had one. They are not allowed to to make both of the compensation picks future picks.

I would agree that teams would prefer to give you a pick next year for talent this year, we did that with Otah. And I would agree that they would prefer to put things off. But to assume that an uncapped year will cause draft picks to get more money than they are currently getting may be a stretch. First round draft picks are already getting way too much for zero production. Plus even if we got 2 firsts before the draft, it would be 2009 and 2010. By 2011, there will be a new CBA agreement in place. So the net effect of getting our picks in 2010 and 2011 versus in 2009 and 2010 won't be that different and may be an advantage. In fact it might be a big boon for us given that the owners will be looking to reduce the cap not enlarge it and they will be looking to install a cap on draft picks salaries as well. The economy will surely play to the owner's arguments in the new CBA discussions

My point was that if you don't do something before the draft it will surely be for 2 1sts. So waiting and using a poison pill would be stupid unless we want to hang onto Peppers at all costs. Doing something earlier makes a lot more success. Nothing you have postulated , changes that in my opinion.

thats what i think is going on, people around the league arent all sold on him. yes if he hit free agency he would get a crazy deal, i just dont think all the teams think he is the stud some do. I really think that he isnt going anywhere, ever. Just like Briggs last year. Ive been saying all along that he wanted the tag. why wouldnt you want that sweet pay day and go into a year that might not have a cap. Maybe he really didnt want to leave, maybe he just wanted to get paid.

I was more refering to the case as if Hurney doesn't want to let Peppers go and a team would have to give up two firsts to get him. Waiting until after the draft would make more sence.

I re-read your original post and realized that that was what you were saying as well. Sorry about that. I got a little confused and thought you were saying that a team would rather give up two 1st rounders before the draft.

And I agree that if Hurney is willing to take less that a team would be stupid for waiting until after the draft.
