Meriweather fined $20k

As a Saints fan ( and over all NFL fan ) the officiating this year has been horrible. The NFL has to do something soon. Make these guys full time employees ( OTAs etc ) and hold them accountable. Everyone knows the NFL can afford to do so.

oh and enough with the huddle AFTER a flag...you threw a flag because you saw something. Dont let the others talk you out of it.

This is what they need to do. Film study, rules sessions and more film study during the season. Conduct referee clinics, work OTAs, and rule consultations with team officials during the offseason.

As it is now, referees have to continue to work their full time jobs during the season to ensure that they have a steady income once the season ends.

Refs do get disciplined. Maybe not fined, because they make little money, but they do get disciplined. I heard on the radio that the "tuck rule" ref (I think it was Walt Coleman?) and his crew have not refereed a Raiders game since that game. And I don't think Hockulee does Chargers or Broncos games anymore either.

Outside of the Super Bowl, a ref not getting to call a certain game is not discipline IMO.

Too many missed/phantom calls in a game, bench him like a team would do a player. Too many bad games, demoted him to Line Judge.

Weight it by yardage. 75+ yards worth of bad calls, you sit the next game.

outside the bye weeks there are 15 other NFL games going on. The NFL will find a game for them. So that isnt even close to discipline.

"look at me" Hochuli did our last game at Jax. I cringe everytime he calls our games.

someone brought up a good point on pft. I think if Smitty had stayed down after the hit he would've got the flag, but he jumped up.

this will lead to a soccer flopping bitch league eventually under these regulations and judgement calls from part time employees. See NYG.

But I guarantee you, for better or worse, Smitty will not be one of the first to lay down to draw a flag.

    • Sound write-up MHS, as always.  Agree that the smart move that forward thinking franchises make would be drafting a tackle early, if not for sure in R1, depending on who's there. Based on early predictions we're choosing between Fano and Proctor. No brainer here...Fano all day. Proctor does not move the needle for me. In my mind, Icky has less future here than Brooks does. I love Icky, but he has been average as a top-10 pick, one good year where you saw the potential...and that was this year. He's built like a RT and his strengths are there, but he's always played left. I also feel like part of what has held him back from being elite, was his work ethic. He was known for it coming out, but feel like he fell right at home in Carolina and maybe didn't push himself as hard as he needed to. Throw in a major crucial injury that will take time to recover and a historical low return rate to current form, and the outlook is not great. Fano can play both sides and we need to also plan for Moton's departure. Either way, delaying drafting a tackle early this year will hurt us down the line. Our current OL is overpriced and needs to start adding draftees to start balancing out the inevitable changes coming in the next 2-3 years.  As others have said, maybe Icky can replace Hunt or Lewis in a couple years when he's fully recovered....IDK. Also not a guarantee, but then you have to figure out his contract and it becomes even more clouded.
    • It's past time to just eliminate it in terms of an event. Just do the voting, name the roster, and move on. When you get down to 6th and 7th alternates it's just absurd. It doesn't mean anything.
