Panthers moving to a 3-4??? Says McDerm

Why are so many people whining about this news, have you guys seen our defense this year?

He!! I'm for any change in the status quo at the moment, I like the fact that this staff is proactive in trying to fix glaring issues, heck it might just work, it can't possibly be any worse than what we are seeing now.

I'm for anything at this point that will prevent an opposing RB from running off tackle and seeing our defense part like the Red Sea with a seal here and a seal there.

in this day and age of hybrid players and physical freaks, a player's size has less and less to do with wether or not he can play a position.

I mean meh... still your size fits that scheme. Look at their sizes. From like 240-260 fits that. Someone has some size but not enough size to be full time. That was Brown. And as a DE in the 4-3 he got manhandled. Those asking him back if we do is a good question. Of course you got select few that goes against the argument, but its only very few. And that's why they're great pass rushers but isn't that good in run stopping

BTW, the supposed weakness of a 3-4 is run defense.

Yeah, THAT sounds like a plan...

On paper, but the top rushing defenses this year are 3-4. This has usually been the case in recent history as well.

But....we don't have the guys to pull it off.

I wish we never switched to a 4-3. I've always been a fan of the 3-4. With that being said, we do not have the personnel for a 3-4 and switching to one now would be foolish. Beason, Johnson, Hardy would suffer. I hope McDermott was just throwing out a smokescreen. Hell, he many not even been here in a couple years anyway from what I've seen so far this year. He has shown me nothing.

i think we're making a bigger deal out of this than it really was.

this was in reference to the fact we ran 3 plays out of the 3-4 this weekend. I think it was more of a "We liked what we saw, we'll try some more" than a "we'll switch the entire base defense to 3-4."

    • Well, the whole rationale used  for the high IQ point guard is it would allow us to spend our resources elsewhere….instead it’s all our first rounders ever since to support the bad pick.  Reality is our front office is just bad.  If you wanted Bryce Young you were going to need to do something unique and special for him.  Instead we just insert a QB with traditional tools into old NFL concepts that pair with traditional talent and our pass game is whack
    • Good to see some other folks are speaking the same language on this. It's simple common sense. But it seems like there's a disconnect due to the misplaced value the team has put on Thielen because he was the only vaguely good veteran WR willing to sign with the Panthers after we traded away DJ Moore. That time has come and gone. We have two first round WR's on the roster now.
    • Yeah I’m turning this into a Bryce can’t play QB thread. Just stating that offense was a poo show two years ago. No QB is succeeding in that, much less a rookie. I feel like it’s become a common debate strategy on here to just jump down the rabbit hole of saying he is just bad in so many ways when any certain point gets countered. If that doesn’t work we can deflect to how poorly this team has been ran. In regards to the actual point we are debating, the OL was struggling, half of the skill players aren’t on a roster, Mingo has done nothing with his new team and the staff are either not coaching or on their 3rd team in 3 years, aside from McCown (I liked McCown too). Honestly about as bad as it gets. No need to try to state how good of an offense it was billed it because that has been proven false at this point.
