Newton the Passer vs Newton the Runner

He's just got to learn to slide instead of taking the hits!

the coaches and players have mentioned that he literally doesn't know how to slide...thats why you see him either fall forward or fall down/slip awkwardly. But I think he has done a good job of getting out of bounds or going down on his runs except for that play last week but thats just his competitive side. If he thinks he can score, he is definitely going to try.

I wouldn't mind seeing him dealing a hit though. Luck does it ;)

I actually like the way he uses his hands to push guys down to the ground. It might be asking for it, but I wouldn't mind seeing him bend down and just nail a defender with his shoulder pads....just as long as it's on one of the last plays of the game and against an AFC team we're not going to face again any time soon.

I forget who, but a few years ago some team brought in a pro baseball player just to teach their quarterback how to slide.

Maybe we should go that route

He's certainly not Michael Vick fast but he's extremely agile and elusive for someone his size.

I'll take that.

I don't know if I'd user the term elusive. More like unstoppable. Defenders always see him on the field and usually get a hand on him....he just doesn't really seem to care.

I was most impressed the other week on a play where one of the Redskins Dman had his hands on his shoulder being held by someone, maybe Stewart, and Cam was still just kind of minding his own business and completing the throw. Like "yeah yeah I know this is where I'm supposed to go down but....just hang on a second...let me get this throw off first".

haha we should...I think its just that he has such a big frame that it just feels awkward for him sliding appropriately and that he has never really been told to do it in the past so he never had to learn.

that might be a good thing.

probably one of the things they'll have him do in the offseason.

His running ability has really helped us extend drives and put points on the board. I agree, we havent even seen the tip of the iceberg of what he can do rushing the football. I think he has a strong chance to break the TD record and post 1,000 yards in a future season.

I don't think he will ever come close to a 1000 yard season....his mental makeup doesn't appear to natually want to run enough for that.

I would just like to see him one game unleash it.....which he clearly hasn't done.

QBs slide when b/c they know they can't beat a defender.....

If Cam is in the open field or at a goalline....realistically....why should he slide much? Cam can beat just about anyone one on one....then on to the next. He seems to have a good feel of when to go down.

he ran over a DB for Cincinnati on his TD run in the preseason.
