A Mid-Season look back at Free Agency.

Not sure why some people on here are getting upset over why we didn't bring in better/more free agents after last season. Hmmmm 2-14...worst offense in the NFL w/ Jimmy running the show.....hell I wouldnt want to come play here either if I was a free agent. This team was pathetic last season.

Ive seen the name Jonathan Joseph float around on here...that guy is a top CB...guys like him want to go to contenders. I think the FO did the right thing in signing our core (best players) on the team including DWill. Yea they were expensive but if we let them go who else do we have or who else could we have brought in?????????? Again...2-14...pathetic team last year.

Many seem to blame DWill for no Barry Cofield.

No doubt Cofield would have been money well spent in Carolina. But Cofield was signed by Washington to a contract that only 12.5 million is guaranteed. I think he counts 6 mill against their cap this year. Would have been far better to draft a field goal kicker and find the extra bucks to land Cofield than to sign Mare long term imho.

And again, 21 mill of Dwill's "5 year contract" is guaranteed and he'll be long gone in 3 years I believe.

NFL contracts are rarely what they appear, if Hurney and Rivera really wanted Cofield in the first place I think they would have gotten him. But we are all aware of Hurney's infatuation with and unfortunate habit of drafting running backs with our #1 picks. Taking DWill, then Stewart with our #1s in the space of 3 draft years was a serious head up ass move.

Don't get me wrong, I love Beason. But drafting 2 RB's and 2 (4/3) LB's in the first round in 5 years is not the "path to the playoffs".

Jonathan Joseph signed with the Texans and Barry Coefield signed with the Redskins--neither of those teams can be confused with perennial playoff teams.

The loss of Williams could've been alleviated by simply keeping Sutton to back up Stewart.

Actually in the last two pre-season games he looked as if he had corrected the fmbling problem with a little corrective training from RR.

He hasnt really seen the field since. So your comments are a little off base on this subject.

fumbled 2x in first one. no touches the next two games. got the ball one less time than in the first one with no fumbles, so, yeah, he may have gotten better. still don't think that he's trusted enough and for good reason. they've decided for whatever reason to move on from him in the one role that had for him this year, as returner. something is going on there and more than likely it's got to do with him not being trusted with more and/or not standing out enough to seal his job.

Talking SMITH into staying was a big plus also

D Williams was not a smart move, considering the teams move from Run first to pass first

did they know that the passing game was going to take off the way it did? as much potential as cam they knew cam had, he was far from a proven and reliable commodity. if things didn't click well in the passing game, we were probably not going to be making that transition to a pass first team. at least not any time soon.

also, i think that people are undervaluing what williams brings to the team aside from his running ability. the dude is just smart and he's a very positive influence/personality on the team and that is something that is needed more when you are a team going through massive growing pains.

there are more considerations that were made in keeping him than just financial, but people are too $hort $ighted to $ee them.

agreed with some of that, though i would add that there wasn't anything particularly appealing here coming off a 2-14 season with a brand new coaching staff and scheme with a rookie QB leading the offense and a disgruntled older WR. that's just not really a situation that many would want to come to. they may have put some feelers out to test the wind and found that a guy like coefield wasn't particularly interested in coming here and it would have taken a lot of money to make it happen that they weren't willing to put on the Dline.

i do think that williams and stewart being drafted so close together had more to do with hat fox was wanting to do with the offense than hurney, although hurney had probably bought into foxball at that moment.

yep. guys want to be with contenders and/or with big market teams over a smaller market team coming out of a very bad situation trying to rebuild.

according to john fox it was. we can't forget who the coach was and how he thought the game should be played. the drafting for most of his tenure here reflected his brand of football.

Texans are loaded w/ talent ready to make a push

Redskins have a solid defense. He wanted to join. $$$ also.

Thanks
