David DeCastro

I think this guy is our pick if we can't land Claiborne or if Kirkpatrick is gone or better suited to play safety. DeCastro could start right away. The way rivera talked about how otah has been doing well working out everyday and he's in a contract year next year, I think otah will play up to his potential next year. With DeCastro we will have the best offensive line in the league.

I could see this happening if things go the way you've stated. However, I think he would replace Wharton at LG if we went this route. Bell or Schwartz will battle it out for the RG spot in TC. Wharton may have to have his contract re-worked or be cut, unfortunately. No proof of this, but with our current cap situation, DeCastro could be an less costly alternative.

DeCastro is a beast. I mentioned him in a post the other night. I really think the chances we take him are much higher than some might think...particularly at the spot we're picking (which might be no man's land for defensive players if Kirkpatrick is gone). He's been mauling people all year, and I have seen more than one favorable comparison to Steve Hutchinson. So even though Guards rarely get taken in the first round, especially the top half, DeCastro looks to be the rare exception that is worthy.

I might be one of few who thinks wharton has played well but too much money, Schwartz showed alot of promise and if Wharton is cut will take alot ps stress off the cap for a defensive player

A guard? With a top 10 pick? A guard?

Seriously, a guard?

Ask NO how important dominating Guards can be. Ask Seattle when Hutchinson was in his prime. No, it's not a normal place to take one, but DeCastro is a rare Guard and when you have the chance to take a rare talent like him, you take it...with the caveat that you do so only as long as it's not at the expense of filling a more dire need position with a player that would also be good value at that spot.

With that said, he most likely will only be a consideration if there isn't a defensive player worthy of the pick. And right now, the only defensive player that looks to fit in that range and would be good value or have anything close to similar impact is Kirkpatrick, and maybe Couples if the team feels he can be a dominant DT (even though I don't think DT is as high on their need list as it is for many fans). CB and LB are the biggest needs right now (FA could change that), and other than Claiborne and Kirkpatrick, there isn't a CB that has any business going that high, and I don't see any LB's worthy of a top 15 pick either. So going BPA (particularly at a position that can be upgraded) becomes more of a likelihood.

I'm liking the idea of this pick more and more. RG was a concern during the offseason coming in, and it was addressed with some spit and elbow grease. He could come in and start from day one.

I think Brandon Hogan is expected to be the #2 next year with Butler in the nickel, Captain and Stanford working special teams and depth. Then again, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the cornerback position got a complete overhaul outside of Gamble. I think Cap stays for his contribution on special teams (which I think might be a reason that Vaughn could make the team over Goodson next season).

This is the worst part about being a fan. The waiting is going to drive me insane

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
