Saints Franchise Breesus

Have you heard one negative thing come out of Brees mouth? Some contract war. He is doing what is best for the team which is pretty amazing considering what most players would do. He just wants another ring and this move is a big step in getting that.

Good God, are you really this freaking dumb?

This is actually bad news for the rest of the NFC south and brilliant by the Saints. They can now take a lower cap hit with Brees and have $$ to sign Colston and Nicks. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the plan all along. After signing the other two and with the Cap potentially increasing they can then sign Brees to long term deal. Loomis again showing why he is best GM in the league.

Aw it's like he doesn't even know. Well I won't ruin his youthful innocence.

The reason it is taking so long is because the Saints and Brees want to make sure it is designed in a way that has the smallest impact on the cap. Don't be surprised if you catch yourself saying "how did they do that?" after the deal is done. It will be incredibly creative and will allow Brees to make sure that he will be a Saint for the rest of his career and pay him among the best while at the same time will open up space for the resigning of key guys. That is what makes the Saints and Brees unique. Best front office combined with a QB that puts the city and winning above ego. Don't be surprised when the Saints sign Brees to a 8 year contract worth around $120 Million and $40 Mill of that in signing bonus. That would give them a very negligible hit and allow them the space to sign Nicks, Colston, Meach and the key defensive players.

The Saints have already lost Nicks, he was never offered a contract and will be offered more then the Saints can afford to pay him. The Saint's have to sign Bree's long term and that's what this Tag is for. Plus the Cap doesn't go up till 2014 and Bree's won't put up with being tagged more then once. I won't be surprised to see Colston walk either since he's probably hasn't been offered a deal either. So Bree's still crippled the Saint's by wanting 23 million a season.

This is just Loomis and the Saint's showing just how much Bree's has them by the balls, nothing more.

Saints have already lost Nicks? LMAO What team did he go to? Oh that's right he is still with the Saints and has publicly said he wants to stay. As far as the salary cap please do a little homework before posting uneducated remarks

A source with knowledge of the situation tells Profootballtalk.com the league and NFLPA are "scrambling" to increase the 2012 salary cap.

Provisions in the new CBA have left teams with less cap space than they were anticipating, prompting the NFLPA to seek to "re-do the numbers." The league has apparently shown a "certain amount of willingness" to cooperate with the effort because it "doesn’t want the players to think they got a bad deal." A resolution is expected within the next 10 days. Mar 3 - 11:25 AM

They had to franchise Brees. Can you imagine New Orleans, if Brees would have walked after the bounty saga. New Orleans would have become the suicide capital of the world in less than 24 hours.

If that would have happened, I would have thought I won the lottery.

He wanted 23, they offered 18, and now he'll get like 16 if he signs. Ouch.
I mean the guy is probably doing cartwheels down Bourbon Street. He's got to be thrilled...and he gets to do it all over again after his next birthday!

Sorry to keep giving you guys the facts that conflict with your fantasies about Saints demise Check out what Carl Nicks is saying for himself. Man this has to hurt!

Just spoke to #Saints G Carl Nicks, who is obviously relieved to hear he won't be franchise tagged. ... "Hopefully they do want to sign me. Maybe its part of a greater scheme: Tag Brees, sign me, sign Colstpn. We'll see/" Nicks said he's definitely still willing to re-sign with Saints and hopes it will happen.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
