The Long Shadow of Chernobyl

We will never know exactly how bad the contamination was. Even to this day, the Russian government denies that most of the people dying from cancer are victims of the Chernobyl accident.

The main reason they still try to cover it up (to this day) is because of a quick rise in demand for electricity in the region caused them to bend a lot of rules which resulted in the quick and sloppy job in the construction. They didnt even train most of the workers properly, which is the main reason why the meltdown occurred, operator error. If the plant had been constructed properly, with safety in mind, the accident would have been far less disasterous.

Due to the Cold War, the leaders of Russia were basically embarrassed that they allowed such an accident to happen, so they tried to cover it up. If they had been honest with the civilians many more lives would have been saved, and better equipped teams from other countries could have helped negate the damage.

I think that it is so horrible the way that they treated the Ukranians (and Belarus) concerning this accident. Had they needed a power plant in Moscow, I am 100% sure that they would have taken every step necessary to ensure that this would never have happened.

That's one of the reasons most Ukrainians hate Russians.
