Jeremy Shockey, who forced his way out of New York four years ago, needs a job and has let the Giants know he would like to return, the Daily News has learned.

How likely is it they would take him back? Remember, the Giants brought in Plaxico Burress for a visit last summer and then offered him a contract. He signed with the Jets. The Giants were willing to forgive Burress for ruining their chances to repeat as Super Bowl champs in 2008 when he shot himself in the leg. So, they could very well forgive Shockey for his antics during his six seasons with them.

The Giants have not ruled out a sequel with Shockey, but Martellus Bennett, the former Cowboy, was their tight end priority — they signed him Wednesday to a one-year, $2.5 million contract. The Giants still have a void after Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum suffered torn ACLs in the Super Bowl and could use Shockey’s pass-catching skills.

Shockey, 31, was the Giants’ first-round pick in 2002, but was traded to the Saints in the summer of 2008 after a tumultuous offseason. He played for the Panthers last season — he caught a career-low 37 passes — and is an unrestricted free agent. Shockey was in New Orleans for three seasons and caught the winning touchdown pass in the Saints’ victory over the Colts in the Super Bowl following the 2009 season. The Saints cut him in February last year.

Shockey was unhappy at the end of his time with the Giants being used more as a blocker. He also felt left out when the Giants went on their Super Bowl run in 2007 after he broke his leg late in the season.

He demanded a trade in March and got his wish in July, a few weeks after he refused to watch a mini-camp practice with other injured players. He also reportedly got into a shouting match with GM Jerry Reese.

He used to throw a fit when one of Eli Manning’s passes sailed over his head or fell at his feet. If there is a Shockey-Giants 2.0, the dynamics of that relationship have changed considerably. Manning has won two Super Bowl MVPs since Shockey last caught a pass from him.

They don't name their source.

    • Two things: 1. Dr. Eric Eager is central to the draft process 2. I know that it was edited, but we didn't hear "Thieneman" one time, not even before the Vikings pick.
    • Why would he sign here as a guard when surely someone would sign him as a tackle?  Assuming he is healthy
    • Went back to watching the highlights. With a sober mind haha. Here is what I saw.    freddie needs to make 1 of those but the rest aren’t on him.    Slavin was BBBBAAAD again last night. Not sure what is going on with these game one Slavin gafs.    miller was ok but had his worst game in the playoffs so far.    nikishin was no good. His his awful turnover led to the first goal at the end of the first period that just can’t happen. ghost was beat like a drum multiple times last night, including the go-ahead goal at the end jarivs wont shoot. He is either hurt or he is struggling mentally and I think it could be a combination of both. He passed up a wide open net on the power-play only to pass it to no one and cleared it himself.     Svech played well. He is getting zero help on that line.    aho. Worst game as a pro. I mean that. He won’t shoot it, passes go to no one and turns it over repeatedly.  He did exactly what they did against Montreal game one when Miller had a turnover. Aho left his man to go help and left the golden Knight player wide open in front of Freddie.  If I was Rod, you Tell Aho when that thing hits your stick you fire it  someone needs to sit him down just him in a room and ask what’s going on. He seems soft, timid and has zero fire.   canes could have won that game   There isn’t a gap between these two teams  they are dead even   Carter Hart’s gonna get lit up in this series. We can beat that guy. the consensus last night was our defense played horrible and our stars won’t score.  clean the defense up. Tell the top line to shoot it everything and we’ll win tomorrow night.   Possibly convincingly.
