I'm not surprised shockey is upset and seeking justice. It's called Slander. It's against the law. He has a case if he pursues it.

He could likely point to a loss of jersey and merchandise sales and use the hysterical hate he's gotten on his Facebook as a very concrete illustration of the swing in opinion that it caused.

It could be argued that Shockey is doing more damage to himself with this drama than the accusations did.

Fwiw, it actually is a rational argument that I am sure the defense will use if it goes to trial. The nfl network could argue that one of the reasons shockey didn't get any offers from other teams is that no team wants to be associated with a guy who is filing a lawsuit against the NFL network.

That being said, if it is determined that Shockey has a case (and I am not sure he does but thats for the lawyers to decide), it will likely be settled out of court at something approximating Shockey's salary for last year.

It seems to me that Shockey's best chance is if he had offers or was in discussions with a team or teams, and those offers were withdrawn or no longer discussed after Sapps's comments.
