Jason Chery = Karl Hankton, with offensive skill???

I been looking stuff up on him, and the more I find, the more I'm liking the signings we made. Depending on the source, 3 or 4 of the skill position guys we signed as UDFA can straight up FLY. Cherry claims to have run a 4.22 40 before.

Additionally, the world famous "Procton" from The Observer and Darin's blogs boards posted his Special Teams stats. Without having seen him play, numbers like that on kick coverage suggests the guy loves to do it.

No to mention, he's fast and gained popularity for his performance in some all-star games. I thought Beavers was my hands down favorite to come in and be our guy b/c of his unbelievable stats on returns and his speed (featured in a youtube video I posted last night - 4.28 40). But this guy returns, covers, and can contribute on offense, which none of our ST guys have been able to do effectively in recent years.

Here's some articles and the info posted by Procton:

Chery's Pro Day Results He wasn't anywhere near a 4.2, but in the article above, it also said he had put on 12 pounds of muscle before his workouts...

* Cherry is a special teams stud. Good returner,

and he was probably the best kick coverage guy in this college draft. He also impressed at the postseason all-star games with his receiving ability. From the Dallas Morning News:

"Jason Cherry of Louisiana-Lafayette was a wide receiver by trade but an elite special-teams player through hard work. In addition to his 60 career tackles, he blocked two kicks, recovered two fumbles and forced a fumble on special teams. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown in his career."

I can't verify the ST stats he posted but, here's all of his other stats:

I know he's a UDFA guys, but indulge me...

what is becoming obvious to me is that the panthers are quietly building a very fast special teams unit. how many choices do we have right now for a returner?

robinson

carter

goodson

munnerlyn

And Beavers. :D

I think they realize how greatly Mark Jones contributed last year and are looking to make sure we do not regress now that he's gone.

can't forget the beaver...

still...is anyone else noticing this?

I am noticing it and i am liking it!!!!

I am not sure..have to look it up but there is some relation to starting field position to sucees in the NFL...i will have to find it unlees someone can post a link

I was thinking we can go back to college style kickoff with two players back and have both of them be a threat to return it to the house.

The NFL has "busted" the wedge with their new rule. Faster guys who can do more on their own will be even more valued now methinks.

makes it a necessity, imo... good call. i wonder if we are actually ahead of the curve on this?

    • I'll be honest.  I'm not sure I want to see any those guys returning right now given what others are presently doing.... minus Coker.  Hubbard returning likely messes the run game up (I mean, it's going to come down regardless but he still), Tremble and Evans actually are doing well, Corbett seems to make us worse up front, and the D has made some strides.  I'd like to just keep that whole lot on the shelf this week.
    • I don't think people know that Icky is still only 25 years old. Panthers signed UDFAs older this year and drafted DJ Johnson. Heres a fact, a deep fact.... Its easier(much) to find a good-great QB than good-great LT. Another fact there's only 12-15 true LTs and the others are larping as LT.  SO....(I'm not a fan btw)......you nearly must resign him at all cost even with him being around the 12th best at times. Its the hardest spot to fill and he's still awful young with 4 years as a pro. Carolina already got 4 years of "cheap" service as well, that's invested time and effort.  The fan-side of me hopes he signs some top 5 at best top 3 big money deal. Just the cap keeps growing and LTs, young LT with experience are rrrrrrare and unique. Tag him if needed and tag him again, then trade him. I think he enjoys being/living in NC.  I hope he's stays on a team friendly deal, but those are soooo rare these days.  Only two options- pay him whatever, even if it's top $$$$$(uggggghhhh..) or tag him for 2027 and keep trying to pay. Worst outcome is trading him for couple 1s, 3s, and 5th maybe a player too.
    • I always loved DJ Moore.  I don't see him wanting to comeback here.  He seems to be tired of inconsistent QB play and you finally see that bubbling over in Chicago.  or maybe he just doesn't like the people.  He actually seemed fine with Fields.....and lobbied for them not to draft Caleb.  So maybe it's just a Caleb issue (and I think Caleb might have tons of baggage/issues that rub folks wrong)
