The domestic violence stuff i dont get. Assualt is assualt. Im guessing it would apply to previous or pending cases?

They are basing that on something that happened in Ohio I think where the courts had a very narrow reading of a even stricter amendment. Probably something to do with the rules that allow cops to arrest someone for domestic violence even if the victim doesn't file a complaint. Normally, if someone doesn't file a complaint, then the case is dropped, except in domestic violence situations. I listened to a Wake Law professor speak on the issue and he seemed to think that would not be a problem with the NC amendment.

Why don't you use some damn common sense before you spew out nonsensical crap. The point of the law was to use it as a political issue to rally the troops for outlawing gay marriage. If the amendment passes, the other things that people are worried about will eventually be settled by the state supreme court, and likely to the point that nothing really changes in regard to cohabitation and domestic violence. The text that was added to the amendment in sep of this year will still allow couples to enter into contracts if they are not married. The amendment should never have been put on the ballot because the legislature shouldn't be screwing with constitution to gain political points.

Relying on the fact that you believe that the State Supreme court will abolish the more draconian portions of the amendment is idiotic.

Well I didn't call you idiotic, I was stating that relying on the supreme court to abolish portions of the bill you don't agree with and using that as justification for voting on the bill because you support the gay marriage portion is idiotic, which, i believe, is not the case with you.

I don't support the gay marriage portion. I don't support any of it. I wish that everyone would skip the thing, not one single person would vote for or against it. Unrealistic I know, but if they did maybe legislators would finally come to their senses and stop trying to make political points with the constitution (federal or state).

Just to clarify, can someone explain the full parameters of Amendment One? I know it solidifies the traditional marriage between male and female, which is enough to get me to vote against it, but what else does it call for?

I know people mentioned single parents, widows, etc.

Try this, its a pretty good run down of the arguments against it.
