The quote was not specific enough to be clear about the reason we weren't winning, but it is reasonable to take this as a bit of a dig at Cam Newton I think... but hardly much of one. He was just using it as an emphasis that yards alone don't matter.

The thing is, Cam's rookie season was about quite a bit more than yards.

At least he's not talking a bunch of bullsh*t like half of the other players that do nothing but mouth off. I think he's trying to prove he's a true leader on this team..I like that he's doing nothing but backing up his team. I think he just wants the Panthers in the headlines and make sure that we're always in the back of people's minds.

Where did the interviewers ask him specifically about Cam? I listened from 4m to 6m, with the comment coming at 4:48 ("Yards per game is one thing but you guys were 29th in passing yards" was the question) and he brought up Cam on his own there.

"Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300 yard games, that's great, but you're not winning. Were up in the 3rd and 4th quarter and you're in 4 minute offense and you're going to be grinding it out."

It is just silly because Smith actually had more attempts in the 3rd quarter than Cam. Admittedly he had far fewer in the 4th, but the biggest difference between Smith and Cam was the YPA... meh.

Playing from behind can happen for a number of reasons, including ineptitude of the offense. It was not thoroughly clear from Smith what he meant. In fact, from the tone and from his previous comments, it is clear he is talkign about OFFENSE here, not DEFENSE. He was saying yards don't matter - and he's right - but people were offended that he used Cam as an example of a quarterback who puts up big numbers but doesn't win the game for his team.

But really, the reason fans of this team were annoyed with him was that his narrative of Cam's performance was really incorrect. While Cam did have more attempts in the 4th quarter than any other quarter, he had just as many in the first half as in the second half. We also were NOT playing from behind as much as he seemed to think. It was just a combination of ignorance I think that caused people to get pissed.
