Question about under center snaps for those who have rewatched the game.

Been thinking about this.

Anybody have a ballpark idea on the % of snaps Cam took under center? What about the WR set's when he DID take them under center?

I was going over this in my head and when I saw that article about the Texans picking up the snap count from the Hard Knocks show on the Dolphins it made me wonder even more about the Panthers and their looks and how it may be obvious what the play is based on being under center and the wr set.

May not be anything but oh well.

Off the top of my head, we didn't take more than 5 snaps under center the whole game. I'll try to check to be exact later.

For nearly the entire first half, we were in a 3 wide receiver formation and Cam took the snap from the gun. At the start of the 2nd half, we showed more conservative formations, in many cases still with 3 WR's but not split out wide. It was clear Chud was trying to increase protection for Cam in the 2nd half.

Again, once I have all the details, I'll post them here.

What is the clap snap thing Cam does now all the time? I thought it was like a hurry up the clock about to run out thing but he was doing it regularly with plenty of time remaining on Sunday.

It's a silent snap count he uses a lot.

Probably says like go on 8, clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap, hut.

In the shotgun....Cam signals Piggy he is ready. Piggy then taps Kalil on Kalil's right leg....Kalil snaps the ball. Cam doesn't actually signal Kalil to hike it from the gun.

The clapping thing is the play clock running low....it just means snap the dang ball Kalil I am ready.

i mention this because during the game in real time i kept saying it looks as if Tampa was doing an uncanny job of either reading the snap or moving guys to the exact spot at the right time nearly 70% of the time. It just stood out as odd that the D cord was that effective in having the right looks/schemes.

so when i read that Texans article i wondered if the shot gun formation and the wr sets or something else was the tell that TB picked up on.

Amount of times he claps Kalil will snap at that set number, we use many snap signals. Hard count under-center. Arm pull, Guard tap(Hangman watches Cam and taps Kalil when he's ready), and now the clapping.

I'm still not sure if they didn't scout us before hand. They seemed to know a whole lot about our game plan and we did not run that many 3 WR sets last year.

Okay, I checked.

Of the 49 plays we ran, 7 were under center, and the other 42 were from the gun.

Here are some more numbers:

  • We ran 6 plays with a fullback or H-back.
  • We ran 41 plays with 3, 4, or 5 WR's.
  • We ran 39 designed passing plays, and just 10 designed running plays. 2 of the runs were by Cam on the goal line.

A couple things stuck out to me. First, our last run in the first half was the 1st play of the 2nd quarter. We basically went the entire 2nd qtr without running the ball (13 straight designed passes). Coming out in the 2nd half, Chud went to formations that gave Newton more protection. The result was our lone TD. The first play of the next series, Cam threw his 1st pick. After that, Chud tried one series with a greater use of the fullback. When that didn't work, he went full spread the rest of the game.

After watching the game again, I'm afraid Chud has adopted the 11 formation (1 RB/1 TE) with 3 WO's as his base formation. This is a minimum protection scheme, especially when you consider that our TE is going out on pass patterns on most downs. Until our offensive line gels, we are going to see a lot more of what we saw last Sunday.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
