So what is the simplest thing we can do?

The simplest thing? Tackle well. We have given up an astounding amount of yardage after first contact in all of our games.

Runner-ups include: OLine play, DLine play, and DBs "covering" receivers from 15 yards away....but those all have multiple points of failure or are schematic and cannot be seen as "simple". Tackling is a fundamental skill that each of these players has been learning for most of their lives. Fixing that should be the most bang for our collective buck if you're looking for one thing.

There is a happy medium between blitzing like it's Madden and playing a zone so soft my wife could find a hole in it for a big gain.

Blitzes are an important tool but constant blitzing / complex pressure schemes are no more effective than our current defensive scheme of "you guys try not to get too close to the receivers - you might catch a cold".

A few thoughts...

Stop running so many plays requiring 4-5 players going out on patterns. Run more 2 TE sets with a fullback to give us more pass protection and run support.

Explore what, if any, FA vet CB's are out on the market. If anyone decent wants to come in for a 1 year swan song, sign them, and ease Norman into his role, rather than just throwing him in the deep end.

Call an occasional jail break blitz, sending 7. Yeah, we'll get burnt sometimes, but at least the QB won't be able to sit back all day with no fear of ever getting hit.

    • The Bucs waived shilo sanders after he got ejected.
    • I'm just tired of ppl saying he's so accurate and then have to see recievers slow down to recieve the ball, ruining any chance at YAC
    • Some people will really look at stuff like this and say "no more excuses" but then make excuses to try and explain away the validity of big-time throws. 🙃   Back on topic though, as I mentioned in the other AT thread earlier, I hope that the team is still exploring the deal. If the Vikings want the Panthers to take on some of the salary, then it had better be at worst a 4th-round pick (though I imagine Dan angling for a 3rd). If they're willing to take on all of it, then maybe at worst a 5th. Tough pill to swallow, giving up a 4th for a 35yr old WR, but if MIN believes they can have similar success behind McCarthy then it could be a smart deal for them. Hell, if AT has any gas in the tank and gives them a 1yr sweetheart deal to close out at home, even better for Minnesota. Yea, Bryce loses his best and most reliable WR. Hunter Renfrow though isn't what I would call a huge step down though (if he's as advertised throughout camp), and it gives more reps to TMac + XL + Coker. This season is all about continued development and answering some of the looming questions (Is Bryce the guy? Is Evero the DC going fwd? How do the young WRs develop? How long does it take this defense to bounce back from being historically awful?).
