Is Jonathan Stewart the MVP of this team?

Tampa didn't have a big lead...

Rivera talked about Stewart on his weekly Sirius appearance......the read option only has a threat of the inside read runs with Stewart.....per Rivera. THAT threat changes how a defensive front plays. We saw that when Stewart was out. They only worry about outside options which lets the defensive front t off more. They can rush the passer all out bc the runs are also going where the DEs want to penetrate if it was a pass.

That inside threat keeps a D from being from attacking all out from start to finish. opens up more for the O.

Yup deangelo is better on the traditional option pitch while stewart better for option read. Cam will never have a lane to bust out to the outside if they know the play is going to go outside anyway.

4 games in...

We average 30+ points with Stewart

We average 8+ points without him.

Cam and the offense just function better, Cam runs better, line play is better. I have said it for weeks now and people still argue it.....Stewart forces a DL and front 7 to play a different game and that helps everyone (it isn't just about his actual touches).

Nice theory and all but not true. Williams broke up it up the middle for his TD. Olsen's TD on the opening offensive series Stewart was not even in at all. On our 3rd TD of the game where Cam broke his 2 big runs, Stewart was not in at all once we got to the 40 of the Falcons. Then on the final TD to Pilares Tolbert was the one in the backfield.

I am not bashing Stewart I like him and Deangelo equally..but I did want to point out the fallacies in your statement.

Yeah, it isn't a theory. Coach Rivera verified my "theory" today.

Stewart makes the inside read a threat and is a huge piece of the O scheme working....per Rivera. DeAngelo doesn't create the same threat....with Stewart out the defensive gameplan is a different one.

Doesn't mean Williams can't run one inside....threat is different with Stewart. Overall gameplans change.

Stewart is a big help and why I never complained about us paying for him. But to say that the whole o-line plays better, cam runs better, offense is better when Stewart is in is false. They each add a dimension to our offense and compliment the entire offense well.

Tampa is the fourth best run defense in the league, stacked eight men in the box and had a coach accustomed to playing the option.

No where did I argue that Stewart didn't change defenses style. My point is that the biggest reason we burned them was due to real poor run defenses. The only exception (NYG) had the benefit of a big, early and growing lead.

    • Re: the safety talk - There's a range of roles they fall into.  And depending where on the spectrum, the value can absolutely align R1, but its rare.  If you identify one that can play 80% snaps off the bat and has the skillset for robber and slot roles, then it aligns.  The best slot a lot of the time (Hamilton, Branch, Emman, Pitre)  It can be tantalizing but many of the time, those defenses were in a good spot already (BAL, SEA, HOU for example)    And for a Fangio-esque defense running two-high-shell, heavy zone w/simulated pressures, and primarily 5 and 6 DB packages, having a guy that can adapt on a package-to-package basis is huge.  If you find a guy that can play back, play robber, and play as a slot-defender all in one is one of the most valuable types in the NFL.  Inversely, if you don't play that way, a FS has very minimal value.  Overall, I would say there is still more inherent value in a 3 down DL or edge rusher.  The nice thing about landing one is we have Ransom to pull back deep when they're in the slot.  There's a few in R2 that could be interesting in this respect.
    • Reader would be solid but Evero definitely has his preferences.  His types on the DL (all spots) are a bit different than the other Fangio disciples.  Even for 0/1, it seems likes the more athletic/fluid types over the power/clogs.  And he doesn't mind using undersized guy like Turk opposite DB.   I was really interested in Harmon & Tyleik Williams last year.  Unfortunately they went way higher than expected so fell between our 1-2 picks.  Unsure how this team thought of them.   Would be nice to get someone a bit more fierce and a pocket-collapser alongside Brown.  2 of the 3 should have that ability to disrupt on any given play.  Of the 1st Rd DLs, I definitely like McDonald but am a bit iffy on Woods & Banks.  The two DL after Round 1 that I think could be real finds are Kaleb Proctor & Darrell Jackson Jr.
    • Okay I hear Ed Oliver and Aaron Donald. Is that realistic?  I been sleeping on this guy.
