Goodell wants to expand playoffs?

I think the dogfight for the only Bye at the top of the conference would certainly make the last weeks of the season interesting. Right now, we have teams that have divisions locked up and as long as they coast they will still have their Byes while not playing fully during the regular season. It will fix two problems at once imo. More competition from the top tier teams late in the season for the 1 bye slot and make those games at the end of the season more exciting for fans.

how much more does it "damage the sport" when a 7-9 team gets in just because they were the turd that floated to the top of their division.

what makes more sense, allowing another team with a winning record to enter the playoffs and provide more quality competition or maintaining the status quo where it's possible for a 10 win team to sit at home come playoff time while a 7-9 team gets to keep on playing?

Here's the thing. You don't need to expand the playoffs to fix that problem.

Just change the seeding system so that the six teams with the best records get in rather than doing it by division winners and wild cards.

That idea's been floated before too.

A Division winner deserves to make the Playoffs. That is still the number one goal. Win your Division.

14 team playoff seems like a prefect match for a 17 game schedule. With 3 preseason games.

Goodall is not just a figurehead. But that is his main job.

More playoff teams mean more playoff fans. That is good for football.

Arguing about hypotheticals is a battle that cannot be won. But please, don't let it stop y'all.

the funny thing about all this whining and bitching about adding a couple playoff teams...just how many playoff games will it add?

if it's expanding to 14 we're talking about 2 added playoff games. that's it. one in each conference and the only one who gets a bye is the one team at the top.

i'm not sure what all the hub bub is.

Desention in the ranks. Who'd a thunk it?

    • When I tell people I was at that game, they usually say oh that’s so cool you had the experience. I call it soul crushing. Why? The weeks and months leading up to it were great, the team was fun to watch every week…some weeks the offense was unstoppable and carried the team (saints and giants road games), other times the defense carried the load (jaguars, tampa). Lots of back and forth games against good teams (Seattle and Indy). Good young players on the team, but the veteran leadership was incredible…from Cam, Olsen, Kalil and J Stew to Luke, TD, Norman, Tillman, Jared Allen, CJ. Role players like Fozzy Whitaker, Cotchery (he caught that MFer), Philly brown, Kyle love, AJ Klein, and so on.  The Friday before the nfc championship my wife and I after a few drinks said let’s see what prices look like for flights/accommodations and we got to talking about how much prices would increase if we waited until we found out if we would be in the big game. We said screw it, we are only out $200 if we have to cancel.  Of course we come out and just pulverized the cardinals in front of the most raucous crowd by far we’ve ever had. We had no idea what we would do for game tickets and then found out a neighbor who worked for the team could get us 2 for face value (each employee got two of their own for free, something cool that JR did).  But then the NFL mafia decided that the storyline of manning going out on top like Elway would give them more goodwill than a non traditional QB who didn’t connect with their target demo and the rest is history. I never have and never will watch that game again. I am just hoping I can see them win one in the 2nd half of my life.
    • Dude you are smart fan. 3 on 0 breakaways won’t matter who is in net. You gotta be better on this one.
    • Raiders are gonna get a good one. Rather have Mendoza fly out and play for the Panthers tomorrow than Bryce
