Travel advice for aruba

Marriott Surf and Marriott Beach clubs are the furthest north headed toward the lighthouse. Hotels own their own beaches, so unless you want the hotel crowds on the beach go just a little north and there are about 3-4 little public beaches the locals use that are nice and quiet. And the snorkeling is better. Sunset Palm Beach, Sol y Playa Beach, Baby Beach are all local beaches.

Most good restaurants are a short cab ride away. My favorites: Madam Janette, Chalet Suisse, Aqua Grill, El Gaucho (downtown), Sole Mare. Great food, but Aruba is no longer an inexpensive trip. Most of our friends are going to Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Mexican Riviera now while the prices are still good.

The last time we went to Aruba was 2009 and we rented a private villa up near the lighthouse for $7500. 5 couples went, it was a 6 bedroom place and came with a housekeeper and chef, had its own pool and beach. The plane ticket and $1500 for the week was cheaper than our timeshare at the Marriott ever was.

By the way- try going middle of the week to middle of the week instead of traveling on the weekend. The customs lines at Aruba's airport suck huge balls

Thanks for all the good info. I'll most definitely be traveling midweek to midweek because I usually do to avoid crowds plus get cheaper airfare but I've also heard how busy the aruba airport gets on the weekends

If your heart isn't set on Aruba, please look at other opportunities. Aruba is not cheap and if you're not doing an all-inclusive, it'll get pretty expensive after awhile. Costa Rica has some nice places, been there twice. Flights are a little longer, but can be cheaper with a package deal.

The past couple years we've been going to the Mexican Riviera, away from the Cancun mob scene. Found this adult only high end all inclusive that is top rate. 9 different restaurants and 12 bars...

Fly out of Charlotte and the entire package only runs me about $5k for the week.

Wouldn't even have to cancel tickets as I haven't booked a flight? I'm assuming you've been to both places if so why Costa Rica over aruba?

touristy places suck. go somewhere where you won't be in an insulated western resort bubble so you can actually go out into a foreign culture and try to communicate with them. you will be enriched. i've never stayed in a resort or an all inclusive anything in my life and my travels have been far better for it.

Spent 20 years traveling the world in the Navy and was able to see a lot of places I would never had the chance otherwise- climbed Kilimanjaro and Mt. Fuji, rode a train across the Australian continent, walked on the ice in Antarctica, ditched in a helicopter in the Indian Ocean.... all before I was 40.

... now I'm much older and simply enjoy the easier aspects of relaxing in luxury.

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
