Only down side there is that unless you're interested in promoting the new OC to HC if/when Rivera is gone, you're limiting your head coach options when the time comes. Any top notch candidate will want input on the OC position.

I agree. What I'm trying (poorly) to say is that unless you're basically hiring Rivera's replacement and sticking him at OC for a year, you're not getting anyone top shelf. And if we ARE hiring his replacement, why the hell keep Ron around?

This may ultimately be Rivera's decision. But if he does not at least get some imput from Gettlemen he is not using all the resources at his diposal. I believe Rivera is smart enough to get Gettlemen's imput.
