In the end, the same old Falcons

By Pat Yasinkas

For all the good the Falcons did this season (and they did at least get a playoff win against Seattle last week), they’re right back where they were at the start of the season. And the start of the season before that.

Go ahead and fire away with the same old questions and criticisms.

Smith is too nice to win the big ones. Ryan can win in the regular season, but not when it matters most.

It’s all valid. In fact, now the Falcons have firmly earned the right to be questioned and criticized from now until the day they win a Super Bowl -- if they ever do.

Put the blame on the coaches, and put the blame on Ryan. The Falcons scored 24 points in the first half and precisely zero in the second half. Ryan fumbled away a snap out of the shotgun formation and threw an interception. A team that prides itself on not making mistakes made plenty of them. There were the two personal fouls and repeated breakdowns on defense.

Let’s not forget what might have been the biggest issue of all.

"Covering the tight end," Smith said. "The tight end was an issue."

The tight end (Vernon Davis, who finished with five catches for 106 yards) was a huge issue, mainly because the Falcons inexplicably didn’t bother to cover him.

But let's forget the individual breakdowns for now. It’s time to start wondering if there’s a more systemic issue with the Falcons. Is there some inherent flaw with this personnel, with this coaching staff and with the way the Falcons do things?

They had everything: a ton of talent, an incredibly loud home crowd and a big early lead.

Yet the Falcons have squandered yet another postseason opportunity. After all the talk about how -- this time -- this team was really, truly different, it turns out the Falcons are nothing but the same old Falcons.

Pat absolutely took the heart out of the Falcons fans and put it in a bag.

As much as I hate the Falcons I do feel a little bad for them. I don't understand why a good team like them (good, not great) gets so much criticism for not winning superbowls. Its incredibly hard to win a superbowl and yet for some reason people write them off because they can't do it.

Outside of maybe 20 fans I actually know that are decent people.

I have no issues with their tears washing the filth of the dome off every year in the playoffs.

I have taken such pleasure in not only the arse whippings by the Packers and Giants, but the heart snatching thrown away lead this past weekend.

Do not weep for your enemy, he will not weep for you.

I don't know one single Falcons fan I would consider decent, not one.

They blew it and choked again, that's all it is. They had the talent, they had the home field advantage and a really loud crowd that was hurting the 49ers, and they just flat blew it.

I love it.

They didn't choke, they ran out of steam with all that damn celebrating they were doing at every accomplishment. They barely won their first play-off.

    • In January 2014, I posted this on another forum.  Seems like it fits again:   Do you remember cheering for the rain? Trying to sleep after “The no-call”? Do you know who needs to "Ice up, son"?   Remember pleading for .500? Thinking there’s no catching the Saints? Punting to Buffalo and knowing how it was going to end?   Do you remember how you felt about Kalil’s ad? Or the fan’s follow up? Gruden’s interview with Cam?   Do you remember Clausen being the steal of the draft? Will you ever forgive Mel Kiper?   Did you cry as Jake said his goodbyes? Do you remember the game that cost Gruden his job?   As fans chant “Luuuuuuke,” do you still hear “Moooose”? … “Hoooove”?   Do you recall changing the diaper? Paddling the boat? Being happy just hearing the name Smoot?   Do you recall the day when it hurt to say “Keep pounding,” and you felt you’d lost a close friend?   Did you hunt the net for Bojangle’s commercials? Have you seen a Cajun’s bare butt?   Do you remember the sunken feeling when Smitty was caught from behind and didn’t get up?   Sports Illustrated’s prediction?   Were you angry at Janet for stealing the spotlight? Does “X-Clown” still give you chills? Do you sing the wrong words to “Day-O”? Whenever you hear “He Hate Me,” do you also hear Rosinski finishing the sentence?   Did you like Seifert a little less when he let Walls’ streak of games-with-a-reception end? But nothing compared to letting Steve go, right? Do you remember that invincible feeling you had when we won the first game of 2001? Do you recall who our division rivals were?   Do you remember thinking “Just wait ‘til Bazooka’s healthy”? How about that weird grin you got watching Kevin Greene fire up the D? Or being undefeated at Ericsson?   If your answer is “no,” we happily welcome you as a new fan of our beloved team. Trust me, we’ll be happy to explain all of these and more to catch you up. For the rest of you, it’s been entirely too long since we were alive after week 17. But every question that you answered “yes” to makes this all the sweeter. Welcome to the playoffs.
    • Future considerations......     DUE to several high dollar players spending time on IR the canes have    37M in trade deadline cap space.....
