MATTHEWS, N.C. —

The Wall Street Journal is reporting a major local employer could be considering a sale.

Matthews-based Harris Teeter employes more than 3,000 people in this area alone.

A spokesperson for Harris Teeter released a statement saying, "Harris Teeter, as a matter of policy, does not comment on rumors regarding mergers and acquisitions."

Harris Teeter is a name and brand people in the Charlotte area recognize.

"This is a staple here in this community, this grocery store is," said Darlene Mullins, a shopper in Matthews.

A report from the Wall Street Journal that company could be considering a sale had people who live in the area concerned about what it could mean about the quality of their neighborhood store and all the jobs the company creates.

"I think it'd be horrible for the neighborhood, the economy, the community," said Corey Ackerman, another shopper.

"A lot of job loss, we cant afford that," said Brittany Pearch.

Harris Teeter won't comment on the report and there is no word of who could buy or what that could mean for the company's headquarters, employees or stores.

Matthews officials say they haven't heard of any possible changes that could be coming.

Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor released a statement to Eyewitness News saying, "Harris Teeter has been a great corporate citizen in Matthews for a number of years and we hope that relationship can and will continue. I count Harris Teeter as one of our 'partners' in the Matthews community. We have a lot of pride in the fact that Matthews, N.C., is the corporate headquarters of Harris Teeter and we would hate to see that change. Harris Teeter has not notified us of any pending change in control or pending sale. I would hope that if the rumors are true, regarding any sale, that they would still have a substantial presence here in Matthews. We will work hard to keep that relationship going. Matthews has and will continue to work together with all of our corporate citizens, both large and small, to make the best of our community."

The spokesperson for the Town of Matthews, Annette Privette Keller, also released a statement saying, "Harris Teeter has been a fantastic corporate neighbor. The town looks forward to a continued relationship with the company.

There has been no indication from the company of any changes."

"They are places you go buy your milk, buy Lima beans and they become very personal," said Dan Morrill, director of the Historic Landmark Commission.

Morrill says this type of discussion isn't just about the business either. It is also about the history and the name that people know and feel comfortable with.

"Someone with strong roots in the community and it gets plucked like a chicken. It's uncertainty," said Morrill.

Currently Ruddick Corporation, a Charlotte-based holding company, owns Harris Teeter.

This can be big for Charlotte area...

Publix probably made them a sizable offer. Publix wants to get into the mid Atlantic and this will put them up into the DC area.

Publix wants to put a regional HQ in Charlotte so simply buying HT would take care of that while also lessening competition.

Would hate to see HT go, but I think they're probably done.

I think they've already established a regional office here. Once Publix starts to come in, they eventually dominate. They are building one about 5 min from my office which I'm excited about. I think the competition or threat of competition from Publix forced HT to upgrade their stores and offerings (eg now they have Boars Head meats, etc), and they have the high end 201 Central stores. Another example where competition is a good thing.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
