Combine Winners and Losers

Mr. Scot

From the Observer (link)

The Winners:

- CB David Amerson, NC State (showed good athleticism)

- DT Sharif Floyd, Florida (most athletic DT)

- OL Jonathan Cooper, UNC (good stats and interviews)

- CB Dee Milliner, Alabama (solidified status as a top ten pick)

- CB Tyrann Mathieu, LSU (showed good physical skills)

The Losers:

- LB Manti Te'o, Notre Dame (lousy 40 and an image - courtesy of John Harbaugh - that'll stick in memory)

- OG Chance Warmack, Alabama (bad 40, skipped bench press, scouts said he looked "soft")

- QB Mike Glennon, NC State (inconsistent/nothing special in throwing drills)

- CB Johnthan Banks, Mississippi State (average 40 time and looked bad in drills)

- DE Damontre Moore, Texas A&M (slow 40, only 11 reps on the bench)

Mind you, this is not written by a scout, but the notes included are fairly valid. I'm guessing Person discussed this with someone in the know and/or picked up on the scouts' chatter. Take it for what it's worth.

One "winner" was the little running back from Auburn, Onterio McCalleb, who they thought for a short time had broken Chris Johnson's record. He still ran a 4.34, fastest RB in the combine.

Somebody will take a shot on that speed around the 4th-6th round and stick him in to return kicks and play 3rd down back.

good thread......only thing i slightly disagree with is milliner...dude was dropping everything in the drills....i mean they were easy passes to......

Person's take in full...

Milliner did nothing to hurt his standing as the top corner in the draft. Milliner blazed through the 40 in 4.37 seconds and dazzled in defensive back drills. If the Panthers want him, they'll have to trade up from 14. Way up.

Granted, dropping passes doesn't hurt a corner as much as it would a receiver. Still, if he showed poor hands, that may indeed turn some teams off.

    • Dan's been part of 5 drafts, 3 as an assistant to the "last guy" and 2 leading the way. The first 3 with Fitts were pretty ugly overall. Last year's draft, his 1st, isn't looking hot. This year looking like a winner.  He's been part of some bad FA decisions, some good ones, and right now we have the most expensive OL in the league with our franchise LT on the last year of his rookie deal. That's going to get even more expensive.  I'm not ready to crown him as a GM god quite yet because one good year isn't making up for all the bad that's been done the previous 4.
    • It is what it will be. I’m over bitching about Young myself. It changes nothing about the situation to constantly complain about him so I personally am not going to do it. I’m looking for another target because this one is played out and it changes nothing.
    • I’m getting his jersey. I never buy jerseys. But today I bought 2 at the team store. I got a Delhomme and Peppers legacy jerseys. They didn’t have my size in. DB jersey. Its at the top of my jersey hit list.
