Curious Scenario for the Cap Guys

If I'm in Gettleman's position, I'm tough on Gross. I give him an ultimatum. If he's such a leader, he shouldn't be making 11 million dollars with our cap situation. I think a 32 year old LT is more expendible than we make him out to be, former pro bowler or not. I think Gross more than deserves a spot on this team, but not for 11 mill, especially at his age.

Sebastian Vollmer, however, is not the answer to anyone's problems.

You can't talk tough to Gross.....when all he has to do is point to our backfield. Gross plays everydown....if Gettlemen needs cap room all Gross has to do is point behind him. Gross has leverage. Other avenues Gettlemen can create room, he protects Cam's blindside, and is probably the biggest leader on offense.

I'm not arguing that at all. I think you're right. But couldn't you say the same thing about Kalil? He certainly has leverage as well, BUT he took the high road and took (somewhat of) a pay cut.

All I'm saying is that if Gross is going to be titled the biggest leader on offense, shouldn't he feel obligated to help this team out in any form or fashion instead of pointing fingers to the backfield, or to CJ, or to Beason, or to whatever?

Kalil didn't take a paycut or the high road. They just shuffled numbers.

Being a leader doesn't = taking a paycut. There are guys who have pocketed a lot of cash out there in recent times that haven't earned it much more so than Gross.

It is taking awhile b/c GM doesn't have much leverage....Gross does. They probably settle on a small restruture shuffling numbers.

All I'm saying is if we gain all 11-12 mil in cap room from cutting gross, you have to admit that replacing him with a downgrade at LT, but gaining a capable RG and still gaining 6ish mil in cap room is definitely enticing.

Why pay two great Olinemen superstar money if the unit as a whole is collectively one of the worst in the NFL? I love Gross and he's been a great player for us, but his salary is handicapping our ability to protect Cam - far outweighing his personal ability as 1/5 of our line. I hate to bring this up as well, but what is our plan if he goes down with an injury?

downgrading from Gross at LT....with weak LG play is dumb. Think of overpaying Gross as a Cam investment for 2013. Teams generally don't pay C's superstar money b/c they are just C's.

With his salary we could get a capable starter at LT, LG and RG.

How is it a Cam investment? Even with Gross all year long most analysts pegged us at around 27-29th in Oline rankings. Even if we cut Gross and didn't replace ANY pieces on the oline we can only drop a few spots when we sport the official worst line in the NFL.

If we are going to spend about 25 mil a year on our Oline then we should be getting results. Gross could be the best LT in the league and I still wouldn't pay him if it meant fielding a poo line.

Gross is a leader and good....and is a diverse lineman.

Don't get the fascination with cutting him

cap space....much needed cap space. unless he restructures, tho, they'll probably wait until next year when they save $8mil instead of $6mil this year. this year would leave an additional $5mil in derad space as opposed to $2mil next year.

deangelo is in the same situation (we'd save $2.8mil by cutting him next year). same with beason....well, beason's dead money would still be a lot, but it goes down by quite a bit every year and next year we'd save $2.75mil by cutting him.

that is b/c our LG, RG, and RT are weak....

It is a Cam investment b/c he work magic if he sees it coming....Gross matters b/c Cam can't see it.

    • Yes, more recently. The way duke fans act you'd think they'd won five of the last ten or something crazy when they've actually won zero if the last ten. They haven't even even played in a championship ship game in the last decade. Carolina has played in three. For all the elite NBA talent that has come through Durham, duke is in a woeful championship drought. Duke fans used to talk all kinds of poo about how Carolina failed to win titles with Stackhouse/Wallace and Carter/Jamison and honestly they had a point. We should've gotten a title or two out of those teams. But man, duke's current run of elite talent with no titles puts that to shame.
    • LOL, what? No one has said anything close to that.
    • In response to mailbag questions about drafting a center from Observer, Zietlow gives this infO  From Alex The Panthers, after all, aren’t going to be as stacked with interior offensive linemen who can be converted into centers as they were last year. Cade Mays is already gone to Detroit. Austin Corbett moved on to Buffalo. Brady Christensen might still come back, but his future is murky too … and he ruptured his Achilles five months ago.   Keylan Rutledge. The guard out of Georgia Tech has received high marks in the pre-draft process, and if he drops to the Panthers at No. 51 somehow, they should take him. He worked at guard and center during the 2026 Senior Bowl.   Jake Slaughter. The 6-foot-5, 303-pound center out of Florida really impressed at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, notably with a 5.1-second 40-yard dash time. He’s a center by trade, and coach Dave Canales likes athletic centers who can get to the second level of the defense. Slaughter is projected to be a third- or fourth-round pick.   Billy Schrauth. Another draft, another Notre Dame draft pick?At least, it’s possible with Schrauth, the 6-foot-5, 310-pound interior offensive lineman and team captain. He spent most of his college career at guard, but reports indicate a transition to center would be easy for him. He’s projected to be a Day 3 pick.
