Rumor: 49ers looking to trade up to 13 or 14...

From the pre-draft presser, I'm convinced that Gettleman wants to stay put at 14. The Jets on the other hand may think differently. Rumors around this time of year tend to be fake, but I believe this one. I mean, why wouldn't the 9ers trade up? Do they even have the money to sign 14 draft picks or whatever? They're gonna grab Richardson or Vaccaro.

edit: Wait a minute, why stop at 13? They could trade WAAAAY up to 6, 7 or 8. Think about it, those teams all need to restock on talent; and they all want a QB of the future, possibly at the bottom of the 1st round. Forget Richardson, the 9ers are wishing on a Star.

The bigger question I saw brought up was if the 49er's even have 14 spots on their roster for rookies? That's basically saying that at least 4-5 rookies will get cut if they keep them all. If not more. Definitely think they're gonna trade a lot of them and if they trade with us they could throw in a late round pick just for kicks.

No way id drop that far. You're dumping a top prospect for some borderline 2nd round guy.

Unless they wanna throw a first in next year. Then, I consider it.

Yea that's what suck. You're losing out on a Vaccaro, Tavon, etc. Unless we have an Elam or Cyprien high on our board, its worth trading down to 31.

That would be true if there was a top prospect likely to be on the board at 14....

And BTW if you did your homework and know the prospects you grab 3 bucks instead of 1.

This times 1,000. It's really not much to ask for a scouting department to find three players who can help this team inside of the top 50. Teams do it all the time. Especially in a draft that is exceptionally deep but not top heavy, I would much rather have three good quality players than two, and that really shouldn't be expecting the world out of our scouts or Front Office.....

If there isn't any "top" talent players to be had at 14,why would the 9ers want to trade up???

Because they view a Richardson, or Slyvester Williams as a critical piece for their defense. That doesn't mean they see the player as a cant miss prospect, just that they see it as a perfect fit that will make their expected Super Bowl run that much easier....

I would swap 14 for 31 and 34 without thinking twice. This draft isn't top heavy. We get 3 guaranteed starters if we make that trade.

So the 9ers will pass up a chance at 3 starters to get 1 starter, who by everyones thinking will be just as talented as the players we could get at the bottom of the first?

Makes sense.

    • And timing is everything.  You don't build the roof of a house before you build the foundation.  Teams that draft #1 overall tend to go for QBs and put them in impossible situations.  Our coach sucked.  Our OL sucked (even when Cam was here, but he could overshadow that deficiency), etc.  They seem to have the idea down (Morgan?) but when Bryce gets paid, you can't have $100m going to the OL and $50m to the QB and still have WRs and a Defense.   We have to develop our talent and be prepared to let them walk and retool.  I am still a bit upset by the Horn CB deal.  Look at the salary we have locked up at OG and CB....Yikes. If it were not for MJackson and Coker, we would have been in deep poopie.   I am still fairly optimistic, and I have accepted the fact that Bryce will be our CB for at least another season.  He is improving, but I do not like the fact that he needs so much investment in the OL and WRs to be average--before his mega deal.  I am hoping we draft an QB with potential to develop on day 3 and see what we can do with him.  Long shot, but some of the top names in 2024 are going to be taken late this draft.  Like Purdy (I wanted him around round 5 or 6), or Ewers from last season.  I like several QBs who may not even be drafted, like the kid from Vanderbilt.  I also like Mateer from Oklahoma.  Raw, but a year on the bench could help.
    • We've still fuged up in the past going "BPA". We drafted Butler at DT and Shaq at LB when DT and LB were some of our biggest strengths of the roster. Butler was a flat out bust and Shaq was basically a JAG starter at LB. I know that triggers some folks, but sorry that's just the truth. We overdrafted him then doubled down on that and overpaid him.
    • We had two shots at #1. Hell, we had them on the roster at the same time. Darnold and Mayfield both.
