Did you guys suddenly forget who our GM is?

Don't feel like we're in win now mode with this pick. Do we fire RR if we don't make playoffs this year? Another rebuilding year?

It doesn't mean anything either way. A first-year head coach doesn't mean rebuilding. Gettlebro has a philosophy and would hire a head coach who meshes with his philosophy. Plenty of first-year (and first-time) head coaches took "rebuilding teams" and went PLAYOFFS DAWG their first year.

Haughbros

Mike Smith

to name a few recent ones.

David Gettleman won two superbowls with an amazing front 7 and a secondary composed of bwood post-level defensive backs.

The panthers rated 2nd in defense in 2002 with an outstanding front 4 and some dudes behind them that may or may not have been busing tables previously

Also, Short had a first round grade on him from several experts (BUT NOT MAYOCK!!!!!)

Giants also haven't been as dominant as 2 rings would suggest.

And their secondary was noticeablely more talented. Sure they weren't great but still weren't on par with what we are presently working with

Also, the draft thus far....seems oddly safe for moving on from our coach and QB.

Gettlemen keeps talking about doing what is best big picture for Carolina. But Newton needs help....if he is your guy. Nothing so far indicates Gettlemen is all in on offense. Just building a NY style D.

Explain this to me then. Aaron Ross was so super awesome that he was cut after starting 9 games in just one season for the awful Jaguars who have as bad of a defense as anyone. The previous year he started all but one game for the Giants. So is Ross good or is he made to look good by their pass rush.

In 2012 their defensive line was one of the worst in the league, both in run defense and pressuring the QB. Yet somehow all those high draft picks the Giants had in the secondary couldn't do poo. They had the fifth worst pass defense last year when their pass rush fell off. They have a bunch of high draft picks in the secondary because they can't draft for poo in the secondary. Again, they look better because generally their front 7 got to the qb consistently than they did last year. They're mediocre players at best and are exposed as such when the d-line can't get to the QB fast enough.

conversely, in 2012 the panthers' secondary instantly looked better with a much-improved pass rush

it doesn't matter how talented you are in the secondary if you give the QB time to throw. You can't maul WRs like you used to, and they will be open to any competent QB in about 4 seconds after the snap.

There secondary still has been better...and I specifically made a point to mention saying they where better didn't mean they were great.

Look at there last Superbowl....Rolle, Phillips, Webster, Ross. You can't say we are working with better than that. Webster was definitely better than any CB we have and Rolle any S.

If they where close to being average......we would have won 10-11 games last year. You are asking the pass rush to be absurdly dominant to survive.
