Star/Short vs. Dareus/Cox/Brockers

Recommended Posts

We have finally landed two very good DTs this year in Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short.

Before that, we have seen many DTs mocked to us the previous few years such as Marcell Dareus, Fletcher Cox, Michael Brockers, and a couple guys that I would've liked to have in the 2nd Rd of last year: Devon Still and Jerel Worthy. Dareus, Cox, and Brockers had very, very good rookie seasons to start their long careers, while Still and Worthy were limited.

I would like the huddle's opinion on comparing Star to Marcell Dareus (2011) and Kawann to Cox/Brockers (2012). For example, just analysis, similarity, differences, etc. I want your own opinions, not quoting sources. Who do you guys think were better coming out the draft? And, do you guys think that Star and Short can have similar type of season like Dareus, Cox, and Brockers?

***Star Lotulelei, NT Carolina Panthers: 6'3" 311 lbs

compare to

Marcell Dareus, NT Buffalo Bills: 6'3" 331 lbs

(2011: 43 Tkl, 5.5 Sck, 2 PDef, 0 FF)

and

***Kawann Short, DT Carolina Panthers: 6'3" 308 lbs

compare to

Fletcher Cox, DT Philadelphia Eagles: 6'4" 298 lbs

(2012: 39 Tkl, 5.5 Sck, 4 PDef, 1 FF)

Michael Brockers, DT St. Louis Rams: 6'5" 322 lbs

(2012: 31 Tkl, 4.0 Sck, 1 PDef, 1 FF)

I think we have a sweet ass DL, but I think it might take some time for these rookies to grow. I still expect to see Edwards, Fua and Kearse in there a lot.

People like to say that DTs doesn't have much impact in their first year, but the past couple of years have kind of prove that theory wrong. You don't think Star can have similar instant impact? I like to think that Short can have immediate impact but I think Rivera is going to bring him along slowly.

I hope these guys come in a have an impact.  But Short and Star most definitely will be better then Fua and McClain were their rookie years.  Mix in a vet in Dwan Edwards, and I think we have a great rotation to get those guys acclimated to the NFL.

These guys are big and strong, but they still might need to perfect there technique at the pro level.

I cant wait to see these guys in Preseason.

Star at NT > all those guys, Dareus has been meh, Brockers has been a good run stuffing DT but is still growing and learning how to use his body and hands. Cox would be preferable at the 3 over Short, comparable size, but Cox is a better overall athlete.

Yea that's what I kind of thought also. I think Star is much better than Dareus and that Cox might have the edge over Short.

Definetely. They are 100x better than Fua and McClain. Well, let's hope so.

Going into the draft I like Star more than I liked any of the previous mentioned DTs, by a lot. I did like Brockers quite a bit more than Short and I'd have put Cox on about equal ground, maybe a hair above. But those are all mid to high 1st round guys vs Short who was a mid 2nd round guy. I think Star will come in and have a substantial impact right away. Maybe not on the stat sheet but definitely on the production of the players around him. Short might have a little longer development period.

    • Yeah, if you tune in for any of the remainder of the season you will get what you're asking for. Nobody but yourself to blame. This is a sports franchise of losers, for losers.
    • Here is my take, go ahead and roast me, I'm ok with it, I know where I am. I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet. I will wait until week 4 or 5 before I entertain that option. This game I blame on the coaching staff. Their failure to give reps to the first team during the preseason was reflected in this game. Lets just call this what it is... our preseason warm up game. You could see that the whole team was flat in the first half. Every aspect of the game, the basic fundamentals. Mental errors, missed tackles, timing on routes, they were not ready for this game. Jacksonville is not a great team but you could clearly see their energy level surpassed ours. I do have to give credit to our defense. They did hang in there and kept competing through 4 quarters (minus the 71 yard run). The way our offense played it's a wonder Jacksonville didn't put 40 on us. Positives I saw, (I know, I know), but come on, we still have 16 games. TMAC IS that guy!! Chuba looked good, and overall, our O-line looked good. As bad as Bryce looked at times I do feel like we're a step or two away from connecting with our WR corps. There were plays to be made that were JUST off by a step or two (again, I know). We have talent at WR, we have talent on offense. To me, this game just looked like a team that was not mentally prepared for NFL week one, and less, "oh my god, we're the same old Panthers". Now I get it... a lot of this hinges on Bryce Young and his confidence. If he can erase this and focus on building continuity with these receivers I honestly think we're not going to suck as bad as we did today. XL... IDK, the jury with him is still out, but there is no doubt the kid has mega potential. Our defense, honestly, considering we have a bunch of new guys on that side, they held their own considering the offense could never change the momentum of the game. I am as disappointed as everyone else at another week one poor performance. But I also realize we are STILL rebuilding. Lets just take it week by week right now and see if we have ANY talent that rises to the surface. Because I really do not know what we have talent wise. And that is not just limited to the QB. So, we will see, but I'm not going to call it just yet... just my take. Now fire away! lol
    • Well for one, what other realistic choice is there? Barring a season ending injury, Bryce is the guy for this year. Next year all options are open, but there aren't any other real world solutions for the 2025 season.
